Sebastián couldn't speak.
Every memory from the last three years replayed inside his mind.
Every time Valeria said she felt unsafe...
Every bruise she explained away...
Every family gathering where Rebeca answered questions for her...
Every doctor's appointment he never attended.
He had mistaken control for care.
He had mistaken silence for peace.
And his wife had paid the price.
He slowly knelt beside the hospital bed.
"I'm so sorry."
Valeria looked at him for a long moment.
"You weren't the one who hurt me."
She paused.
"But you kept believing the people who did."
Those words hurt more than anything he had ever heard.
Sebastián lowered his head.
Tears finally fell.
"I failed you."
Valeria reached for his hand.
"No."
She squeezed it gently.
"You failed to listen."
A few moments later, the baby's heartbeat echoed steadily through the monitor.
