Chapter 14: Apprehension

Chapter 14: Apprehension
The cold, recycled air of the jet bridge suddenly felt like a physical wall. Vanessa’s foot, clad in a sleek designer loafer, hovered inches above the carpeted ramp. The brunette wig, which had felt like a perfect shield just seconds ago, suddenly felt heavy and suffocating.
"I... I think there’s been a mistake," Vanessa stammered, frantically trying to deploy the Canadian accent she had practiced in the taxi. She took a step back toward the terminal, clutching her canvas duffel bag to her chest. "My name is Chloe Bennett. You're blocking my gate."
Ethan didn't move. He stood with his hands tucked into the pockets of his denim jacket, an immovable force of logic and consequence.
"The accent is a nice touch, Valerie," Ethan said, his voice eerily calm against the hum of the aircraft engines. "But the biometric scanner on Locker 402 at Union Station? That was a mistake. When you registered that thumbprint three years ago, you tied it to an IP address that Marcus has been tracking since we left the boardroom."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding up a sleek tablet. On the screen was a frozen frame of security footage from the train station, showing Vanessa swapping her blonde wig for the brunette one.
"You're a brilliant con artist," Marcus said, adjusting his glasses. "But you're predictable in a panic. Grifters always have a go-bag, and they always run to non-extradition countries. Mexico City to Buenos Aires? It's practically a cliché."
Vanessa’s mind spun, searching for a way out, a loophole, a final bluff. "You're civilians," she hissed, dropping the accent, her voice vibrating with cornered panic. "You can't detain me. If you touch me, I'll scream, and airport security will arrest you."
She turned around, preparing to shove past the gate agent and sprint back into the crowded terminal. But the path was already blocked.
Stepping out from the shadows of the jet bridge access door were two men wearing tactical vests emblazoned with three bold, yellow letters: FBI.
"Valerie Vance," the taller of the two agents announced, his voice devoid of any emotion. He unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for extortion, wire fraud, and interstate conspiracy to commit fraud. Please place your bag on the floor and turn around."
The remaining color drained from Vanessa’s face. The reality of the situation finally pierced through her delusions of invincibility. There was no more charming her way out of this. There were no more fake tears to shed.
"No," she whispered, shaking her head. "No, please. I have thirty thousand dollars in this bag. Take it. Just let me get on the plane."
"Attempting to bribe a federal agent," the second agent noted dryly, stepping forward and firmly grabbing her by the shoulder. "That's another charge. Turn around."
She was spun around roughly. The metallic click, click, zip of the handcuffs locking tightly around her wrists echoed loudly in the narrow tunnel. The canvas duffel bag was snatched from her grip, the cash inside seized as evidence of her flight risk.
"Let's go," the lead agent commanded.

They marched her out of the jet bridge and back into the terminal. It was the ultimate, crushing humiliation. The premium passengers waiting in the lounge, the families at the food court, the duty-free shoppers—hundreds of people stopped and stared as the chic, brunette woman in designer sweatpants was paraded through O'Hare International Airport in federal custody.
Ethan and Marcus walked a few paces behind. Ethan watched her defeated posture, the way she kept her head down to hide from the smartphone cameras already flashing in the crowd. The nightmare she had inflicted on his brother and Sarah was finally over. The illusion had been shattered, and now, the architect of the lie was being dragged into the harsh, unforgiving light of reality.
