Chapter 5: Lawyer Up

Chapter 5: Lawyer Up
The next morning, the Miller estate felt like a mausoleum. The remnants of the barbecue had been cleared away by a cleaning crew before dawn, erasing all physical evidence of the disaster. But the emotional hangover was suffocating.
Nathan was sitting at the massive granite island in the kitchen, staring blankly at a cold cup of black coffee. His suitcases were packed and waiting by the front door. He was moving into a luxury hotel downtown, a self-imposed exile while his lawyers scrambled to figure out the legal nightmare he had created.
The sound of heavy boots echoed in the foyer, and Ethan walked into the kitchen, tossing a thick manila folder onto the counter.
"Sarah's gone," Nathan muttered, not looking up. "She went to her sister's house for the week. Her lawyer emailed mine at 6:00 AM. They are pushing for an absolute routing of my assets. And frankly... I told my guy not to fight it."
"Good," Ethan said flatly, pulling out a stool and sitting across from his brother. "Take the hit, Nate. You owe her that much. But Sarah’s settlement is the least of your problems right now."
Ethan opened the manila folder, spreading a series of glossy photographs and printed financial records across the granite surface.
"Vanessa left a voicemail on my phone last night," Nathan admitted, his voice raspy. "She's doubling down. She says if I don't pay her two million dollars in hush money, she's going to the tabloids. She's going to claim that I forced her into an abortion to save my marriage, and that the deflated belly was a trauma response. A phantom pregnancy brought on by my abuse."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. "It’s a brilliant extortion play. It plays perfectly to the media. The wealthy, corrupt CEO forcing his young, vulnerable girlfriend to terminate a pregnancy. Even if it's a complete lie, the PR scandal would tank your company's stock before the truth ever saw the inside of a courtroom."
"I should just pay her," Nathan said, burying his face in his hands. "Cut the check, make her sign an NDA, and make her disappear. It's the only way to protect the board."
"No," Ethan slammed his hand down on the counter, making the coffee cups jump. "You are not paying that parasite a single dime. You are not rewarding her for destroying your life."
"Then what do we do, Ethan? She has ultrasound pictures! She has medical records from that clinic!"
"Those records are exactly how we bury her," Ethan said, tapping a photograph in the folder. It was a grainy surveillance shot of Dr. Aris Thorne walking out of a rundown medical clinic on the south side of the city.
"I made a phone call last night," Ethan explained. "I hired Marcus Vance. He’s a private investigator who specializes in corporate espionage and medical fraud. He spent the entire night digging into Vanessa's background."
Ethan pushed a document toward Nathan. "Her real name is Valerie Vance. And she is not a vulnerable young woman. She has a string of aliases and at least three sealed civil settlements in two different states. She targets wealthy, unhappily married executives, creates a crisis, and cashes out quietly. But she’s never tried a fake pregnancy before. This required technical medical knowledge."
Nathan stared at the rap sheet, a cold sickness settling in his stomach.
"Dr. Thorne is the key," Ethan continued, his eyes cold and focused. "He provided the fake ultrasounds. He coached her on the medical terminology to fool you. He prescribed the prenatal vitamins to establish a paper trail. Vanessa is a grifter, but Thorne is a licensed medical professional risking his entire career for a payout. He’s the weak link."
"So what's the plan?" Nathan asked, looking at his younger brother. For the first time in his life, Nathan wasn't the one in charge.
"We don't negotiate with Vanessa," Ethan said, closing the folder with a definitive smack. "We isolate her. We hunt down the money trail connecting her to Dr. Thorne. We get the doctor to flip, and then we destroy her extortion plot before she even has a chance to dial a reporter."

Ethan stood up, grabbing his denim jacket from the back of the chair.
"Grab your bags, Nate. You're going to the hotel to keep your head down and stay off the radar. Marcus and I are going hunting."
