The silence inside the executive boardroom was nothing like the silence inside the mansion.
This one carried power.
Twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table, each with a folder already opened before them.
At the head of the room sat Elena Ward.
For the first time in years, she occupied the chair that had always been reserved for the controlling shareholder.
Daniel entered thirty seconds late.
His tie was crooked.
His face was pale.
He forced a smile.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
No one answered.
The Chief Legal Officer stood.
"Mr. Daniel Carter, under Article Nine of the Ward Family Trust, the majority shareholder possesses the authority to remove any executive whose continued leadership threatens the corporation."
He slid another document across the table.
"Effective immediately, your position as Chief Executive Officer has been terminated."
Daniel stared at Elena.
"You knew this entire time."
She met his eyes calmly.
"I hoped I would never need to use it."
One by one, the board members voted.
Twelve votes.
Twelve approvals.
Not a single objection.
Daniel looked around desperately.
The same executives who once applauded him now avoided his eyes.
Security appeared quietly at the door.
The head of security spoke respectfully.
"Mr. Carter... I'll escort you out."
Daniel looked back one last time.
"Elena... I loved you."
She didn't answer.
Because love never required humiliation.
Security escorted him away while the board unanimously elected an interim CEO.
Then every director turned toward Elena.
"The company is yours, Ms. Ward."
