Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN WITHOUT THE NAME

Conrad’s warning forced another review of everyone connected to Emily’s pregnancy.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Attorneys.

Security officers.

Trust administrators.

Household employees.

Foundation staff.

No unexplained access appeared except one.

Margaret Whitmore had visited the neonatal floor under special family authorization two hours after Claire’s birth.

The visit had not been approved by Emily.

Raymond had assumed Emily invited her.

Emily had assumed Raymond did.

Security footage showed Margaret standing outside Claire’s room for three minutes.

She did not enter.

She spoke to a nurse.

Then she left.

The nurse could not remember the conversation.

Margaret’s flight records showed she arrived from Switzerland the morning before Emily’s delivery.

She had lied when Emily called her about Preston’s first gift.

She was already in Chicago.

Detective Ruiz located her at a hotel near the lake.

Margaret agreed to come to the hospital.

She entered the conference room wearing a cream coat and pearl earrings.

She looked elegant, tired, and completely unsurprised by the officers.

Emily remained standing despite the pain across her surgical incision.

“Why were you outside Claire’s room?”

“I wanted to see my granddaughter.”

“You did not ask me.”

“I knew you would refuse.”

“Why did the nurse lose twenty minutes of memory after speaking to you?”

Margaret looked toward Detective Ruiz.

“I gave her nothing.”

“Then explain the missing time.”

“I cannot.”

“Did you help Conrad?”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“I helped build Conrad.”

The answer silenced the room.

Margaret removed her gloves.

“When I married him, he had a respected name and no money.”

“My family supplied the first hospital investment.”

“Claire Saint Claire treated me like a decoration.”

“She believed intelligence required public recognition.”

Emily studied her.

“My mother gave you a board seat.”

“She gave me a chair and ignored my vote.”

“So you helped Conrad steal.”

“I created Northstar.”

Raymond stared at her.

“The company existed before your marriage.”

“My father created the original entity.”

“I repurposed it.”

Detective Ruiz stepped closer.

“You financed Daniel Mercer’s murder.”

Margaret’s face remained calm.

“Conrad arranged the mechanic.”

“You paid him.”

“Yes.”

Emily felt the room narrow.

“My mother?”

“Conrad handled the nurse.”

“Did you order it?”

“I did not stop it.”

The same defense Preston had used.

The same cowardice wearing different clothing.

“Why did Conrad say you began the current plan?”

“Because I did.”

Margaret sat.

“Preston was becoming weak.”

“He wanted to confess.”

“Vanessa was becoming impatient.”

“Conrad was becoming careless.”

“I created the guardianship strategy to keep them focused.”

“You planned to steal Claire.”

“I planned to protect the bloodline.”

“She is not your property.”

“She is Preston’s daughter.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She carries Whitmore blood.”

Emily leaned forward.

“Her legal name is Claire Rose Saint Claire.”

Margaret’s composure cracked.

Only slightly.

“You removed Preston’s name?”

“He gave me every reason to.”

Margaret looked toward the door.

Detective Ruiz blocked her path.

“You are under arrest.”

Margaret smiled.

“No.”

The fire alarm sounded.

Sprinklers activated outside the conference room.

Smoke rolled beneath the door.

Detective Ruiz drew her weapon.

Officers opened the secondary exit.

The adjoining corridor was empty.

Emergency lights flashed.

Margaret remained seated.

“You learned nothing,” she said.

Emily stared at her.

“This family always looks toward the loudest man.”

“Conrad shouted.”

“Raymond commanded.”

“Preston begged.”

“No one watched the woman setting the table.”

A loud impact shook the floor.

The neonatal unit lost power.

Backup generators started.

Emily ran despite the pain.

Detective Ruiz followed.

Security officers surrounded Margaret.

Emily reached Claire’s room.

The incubator remained powered by battery.

The nurse who had spoken to Margaret was missing.

A medication drawer stood open.

Caleb checked access logs.

The missing nurse’s badge had opened the rooftop elevator.

Emily looked through the window.

A figure pushed a covered infant transport unit toward the elevator at the end of the hall.

Claire’s incubator remained in the room.

Dr. Shaw pulled back the blanket.

A hospital training doll lay beneath it.

Emily screamed Claire’s name.

The figure reached the elevator.

Detective Ruiz ran.

The doors closed before she arrived.

The elevator moved upward.

Roof level.

Margaret had used the first visit to condition the nurse.

She had likely threatened or bribed her.

The fire alarm and power interruption created the opening.

Emily entered the stairwell.

Dr. Shaw grabbed her arm.

“You cannot climb twelve floors.”

“Watch me.”

Raymond arrived from the lower corridor.

He took one look at the empty incubator and followed.

They climbed.

Emily’s incision burned.

Her vision blurred.

She held the rail and continued.

Detective Ruiz and two officers reached the roof first.

Wind tore across the helipad.

A medical helicopter waited with its blades turning.

The missing nurse stood beside the transport unit.

A man held a gun behind her.

Mason Cole.

He had escaped federal custody during the hospital explosion by switching identification bands with an injured guard.

Margaret had arranged it.

Mason pushed the transport unit toward the helicopter.

Claire cried beneath the cover.

Emily stepped onto the roof.

“Stop.”

Mason turned.

His face changed when he saw her.

“You should be in bed.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Your child will be safe.”

“You prepared her death certificate.”

“That was Conrad’s idea.”

“Everything is always someone else’s idea.”

Mason pressed the gun against the nurse.

“Move back.”

Detective Ruiz lowered her weapon slightly.

Emily continued walking.

“Where will you take her?”

“Somewhere Margaret can raise her properly.”

“Margaret is under arrest.”

Mason’s confidence flickered.

“She said she would meet us.”

“She lied.”

The helicopter pilot looked uncertain.

He removed his headset.

Mason shouted at him to stay inside.

The nurse began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily looked at her.

“Push the incubator toward me.”

Mason tightened his grip.

“She does that, she dies.”

Claire cried again.

The sound was thin beneath the wind.

Emily stopped.

Raymond reached the roof behind her.

Mason looked toward him.

“You destroyed everything.”

Raymond answered.

“No.”

“You did.”

Mason swung the gun toward Raymond.

Detective Ruiz fired.

The bullet struck Mason’s shoulder.

He collapsed against the transport unit.

The nurse ran.

The incubator began rolling across the sloped roof.

Emily lunged forward.

Her hands caught the handle.

Pain tore across her abdomen.

She fell to her knees.

The wheels stopped inches from the edge of the helipad.

Raymond reached her.

Together, they pulled Claire back.

Detective Ruiz secured Mason.

The helicopter pilot shut down the engine.

The roof became suddenly quiet.

Emily opened the transport cover.

Claire’s face was red from crying.

Her oxygen tube remained attached to a portable tank.

Emily lifted her carefully.

“I’m here.”

Claire’s crying softened against her chest.

Raymond wrapped his coat around them.

Below, police escorted Margaret through the hospital lobby.

She looked up toward the roof as though she could see them through concrete.

For the first time, Margaret Whitmore appeared afraid.

The woman who had spent forty years arranging everyone else’s movements had finally lost control of the room.
