Chapter 8 - THE DOCTOR WHO DISAPPEARED

Dr. Martin Keller had not left Chicago.

The airport vehicle had been a distraction.

Security footage showed a man wearing Keller’s coat and hat entering the terminal, then leaving through a service corridor.

The real Keller had used an ambulance transfer authorization to pass through the hospital’s underground medical entrance six hours after Emily’s assault.

He had never logged out.

That meant he might still be inside the medical complex.

Raymond ordered a room-by-room search.

The hospital contained more than nine hundred patient rooms, six surgical wings, research laboratories, maintenance tunnels, offices, storage floors, and a network of old passages connecting the original Saint Claire building to the newer towers.

Closing the entire facility was impossible.

Patients still required treatment.

Emergency rooms still received ambulances.

Infants still breathed inside intensive care incubators.

The search had to remain quiet.

Emily learned about Keller’s possible presence at four in the morning.

She had been awake, reading her mother’s second letter.

Raymond entered with Detective Ruiz and Dr. Shaw.

“You are moving rooms,” Raymond said.

“Why?”

“We have reason to believe Keller may be inside the building.”

Emily looked at Dr. Shaw.

“Can he access this unit?”

“Not without triggering an alert.”

“Unless he uses someone else’s credentials.”

No one contradicted her.

Two nurses disconnected the portable equipment.

Security officers cleared a private route to a protected recovery suite in the surgical wing.

Emily was transported under a blanket to prevent anyone watching the corridors from identifying her.

Dr. Shaw remained beside her.

“Where is Preston?” Emily asked.

“At the Saint Claire estate,” Raymond said.

“You let him inside?”

“The house is being monitored.”

“Why not arrest him?”

Detective Ruiz answered.

“We have evidence of conspiracy, but we are still establishing his direct role in the medical fraud.”

“You heard the recording.”

“It proves he encouraged the assault.”

“Then charge him.”

“We intend to.”

She paused.

“But Conrad’s network is larger than Preston.”

“If we move too early, the others scatter.”

Emily hated the answer because she understood it.

Preston remained useful while he believed he had room to move.

The protected suite had no exterior sign.

Its windows faced an interior courtyard.

Two officers remained outside.

Caleb placed isolated cameras in the corridor.

Only five people knew Emily had been moved.

At six thirty, Preston called her phone.

She watched his name glow on the screen.

The call ended.

It began again.

Raymond reached for the phone.

Emily stopped him.

“I’ll answer.”

“You do not have to speak to him.”

“I need to know what he thinks.”

She accepted the call.

“Emily.”

Preston sounded exhausted.

She remembered when his voice had once made her feel safe.

Now, it sounded like a door closing.

“Where are you?”

“In the hospital.”

“They moved you.”

“Why are you calling?”

“I want to explain.”

“Explain the cameras?”

Silence.

“The forged medication?”

“Emily, I did not know the full extent of what Vanessa was doing.”

“You signed the guardianship petition.”

“My father said it was a precaution.”

“Against what?”

“Your uncle.”

She looked at Raymond.

“Raymond has controlled you since childhood.”

“Raymond did not tell Vanessa to kick me.”

“I never told her to kick you.”

“We have your voice.”

“I told her to do something else.”

“What?”

“To step away before you saw us.”

“Then why did you say the railing would make it look accidental?”

Preston’s breathing changed.

“That recording is incomplete.”

“So complete it.”

“I was afraid you would attack her.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Even now, he was building the same story.

The unstable wife.

The frightened mistress.

The concerned husband.

“Did you love me?”

Preston did not answer immediately.

“I still love you.”

“That was not my question.”

“I did not marry you for the hospital.”

“Did you know who I was before the coffee shop?”

Silence.

Emily felt something final break inside her.

“You knew.”

“My father told me your name.”

“How long before we met?”

“A few weeks.”

“Three months.”

“Who told you that?”

“Does it matter?”

“I fell in love with you after we met.”

“But you arranged the meeting.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

Perhaps he believed one confession might make the rest appear sincere.

“You researched me.”

“I wanted to understand your life.”

“You requested donor records.”

“My father asked me to.”

“You hid cameras in our daughter’s nursery.”

“No.”

“Vanessa purchased them through your company.”

“I did not know about the audio function.”

“You watched the recordings.”

“I watched one.”

“You smiled when I explained the trust.”

“I was surprised.”

“Why did you forge my medical record?”

“I didn’t.”

“Why did you prepare to take custody?”

“I was trying to protect our baby.”

“From whom?”

“From Raymond.”

Preston lowered his voice.

“You do not understand what he did to your father.”

“I understand more than you think.”

“Then you know he stole hospital money.”

“He was tracing Conrad’s theft.”

“That is Raymond’s version.”

“It is supported by a ledger my mother hid.”

Preston became silent.

Emily knew immediately she had revealed too much.

“Where did you find a ledger?”

“That is none of your concern.”

“Emily, listen to me.”

His urgency increased.

“My father is dangerous.”

“You worked with him.”

“I thought I could control him.”

“You thought you could control everyone.”

“He has Keller.”

Raymond moved closer to the phone.

Emily kept her voice calm.

“What do you mean?”

“Keller is not hiding from police.”

“What is he doing?”

“He is looking for you.”

“Why?”

Preston began speaking faster.

“My father believes the emergency succession can be reversed if the beneficiary is medically incapable at the moment of activation.”

“That is not in the trust.”

“He has an attorney prepared to challenge it.”

“What does Keller have to do with that?”

“He has medication.”

Emily felt cold.

“What medication?”

“Something that can cause confusion, memory loss, and fetal distress.”

Dr. Shaw reached for the phone.

Emily held up one hand.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said Conrad has him.”

“He stopped answering me.”

“When did you last speak?”

“Last night.”

“What did he say?”

“That he would correct the mistake.”

A warning light flashed on Caleb’s security tablet.

One corridor camera had gone dark.

Then another.

The protected suite’s lights flickered.

Raymond signaled to the officers outside.

Emily heard a door open.

One officer spoke through his radio.

Then a heavy impact sounded in the hall.

Dr. Shaw moved toward Emily.

The lights went out.

Emergency lighting glowed red along the floor.

The phone remained pressed to Emily’s ear.

May you like

Preston whispered, “He found you.”

The door handle began turning.
