Chapter 1– The Medal They Never Should Have Touched
Marissa's eyes narrowed.
"What did he take?"
Emily swallowed painfully. Her fingers trembled beneath the blanket.
"He... he ripped your medal off my backpack."
Silence.
Not ordinary silence.
The kind that carries the weight of history.
Marissa looked toward the worn canvas backpack resting in the corner of the hospital room. One strap had been torn clean through. The zipper hung open. There, barely attached by a bent pin, was the empty ribbon where the medal had once been.
It wasn't expensive.
It wasn't made of gold.
It wasn't even the highest military honor Marissa had ever earned.
But Emily had carried it every day since she started high school because her mother had once told her, "When I'm deployed and you miss me, keep this with you. It means I'll always find my way back."
Dustin hadn't stolen a piece of metal.
He had stolen a promise.
Marissa carefully picked up the backpack.
Her fingers brushed the torn fabric.
"Did he know what it was?"
Emily nodded.
"I told him it was yours."
"And?"
"He laughed. He said heroes only exist in movies."
Marissa closed her eyes for one long breath.
Then she opened them again.
"He's wrong."
Less than an hour later, a black government SUV rolled quietly into the hospital parking lot.
Three men in civilian clothes stepped out.
No uniforms.
No flashing badges.
Just calm faces and disciplined movements.
The oldest approached Marissa.
"Colonel."
She handed him a photograph of Dustin that had already been pulled from school records.
"I don't want guesses."
"No, ma'am."
"I don't want rumors."
"No, ma'am."
"I want facts."
He nodded.
"Understood."
Marissa looked back toward Emily's hospital window.
"And bring me my daughter's medal."
The men exchanged brief glances.
Every one of them had served under Marissa.

Every one of them knew what her voice sounded like before impossible things became possible.
Within minutes, the search had begun.
