Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden Behind the Laughter

Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden Behind the Laughter
By sunrise, Dustin believed he had gotten away with everything.
He sat inside his father's luxury home, scrolling through social media.
Friends were already joking about the fight.
Some called Emily weak.
Others claimed she had exaggerated everything.
Dustin smiled.
Then someone knocked.
Not loudly.
Just once.
His father opened the front door.
Standing outside were two detectives, a school investigator, and a representative from the military police.
The smile vanished.
"What is this about?" Dustin's father demanded.
One detective held up a search warrant.
"We're investigating aggravated assault, robbery, witness intimidation, and evidence tampering."
Dustin stood so quickly that his chair crashed backward.
"You can't prove anything."
The detective simply placed a tablet on the dining table.
Hospital security footage.
Street surveillance.
Video from three nearby businesses.
And one recording from a teenager across the street who had captured nearly the entire attack on his phone.
There was no confusion.
No missing pieces.
No alternate explanation.
The footage showed Dustin laughing while Emily lay on the pavement.
It showed him tearing the medal from her backpack.
It showed his friends cheering.
Then came the final clip.
Emily whispering through tears,
"Please... just give it back."
Dustin looked at the screen.
His face drained of color.
His father slowly turned toward him.
"You told me she attacked you."
"I..."
"You lied."
For the first time since the attack, Dustin looked frightened.
Not because Colonel Marissa Vale was coming.
Because the truth already had.
Outside, news vans began pulling onto the street.
By noon, the video had spread across the country.

The same classmates who had laughed only a day earlier now refused to defend him.
Silence had switched sides.
