Chapter 11 - The Daycare Door

I don’t remember leaving Dana’s office.

I remember the elevator.

I remember my hands shaking so badly that Nora took my car keys.

I remember calling the daycare three times during the twelve-minute drive.

Each time, they assured me Maisie was safe.

Margaret had not taken her.

But she had tried.

The daycare director met me at the entrance.

Maisie was sitting in the office eating apple slices.

The moment she saw me, she jumped from the chair.

“Mama!”

I dropped to my knees.

She ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly that she squeaked.

“Too tight.”

“I’m sorry, baby.”

I loosened my arms.

“Were you scared?”

She shook her head.

“Nana came.”

My throat closed.

“What happened?”

“Teacher say no.”

The director explained.

Margaret arrived shortly after lunch.

She told the receptionist there had been a family emergency.

She said Evan had authorized her to collect Maisie.

Margaret’s name was still listed as an emergency contact from when Maisie first enrolled.

But because I had called the previous day and specifically removed pickup authorization, staff refused.

Margaret became angry.

Then she produced a printed email.

Supposedly from Evan.

It said Margaret had permission.

The director called me.

Margaret tried to take Maisie anyway.

Security escorted her outside.

“Did she touch my daughter?”

“No.”

“Did she threaten anyone?”

“She said you were unstable and that we might be hearing from an attorney.”

Of course she did.

Always the same story.

Unstable.

Emotional.

Difficult.

Words designed to make control sound like concern.

Dana arrived twenty minutes later.

The daycare provided security footage and written statements.

Dana watched the video once.

Then she looked at me.

“We’re filing today.”

“For what?”

“A protective order restricting Margaret’s contact.”

I nodded immediately.

“What about Evan?”

“That depends on what the evidence shows about his involvement.”

I thought about the letter.

The loan.

The stolen money.

The custody notes.

“I don’t trust him.”

“Then say that.”

So I did.

That evening Evan called.

I answered only because Dana told me to preserve communications.

“I didn’t send Mom to daycare.”

“Did you give her permission?”

“No.”

“Does she have access to your email?”

Silence.

My blood ran cold.

“Evan.”

“She knows some passwords.”

I closed my eyes.

“Change them.”

“I did.”

“When?”

Too late.

“Why did she go there?”

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

He started crying again.

“She’s panicking.”

“So am I.”

“She thinks you’re going to cut her out of Maisie’s life.”

“She hit Maisie.”

“One mistake shouldn’t erase everything.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“One mistake?”

“She lost control.”

“And then tried to remove my child from daycare without permission.”

“She loves her.”

“Love does not give someone ownership.”

He became quiet.

Then he whispered, “You’re going to divorce me, aren’t you?”

I looked across Nora’s living room.

Maisie was asleep against a pillow.

Her stuffed rabbit rested beneath her chin.

“I don’t know what document will eventually end our marriage.”

I paused.

“But the marriage I thought I had is already gone.”

Evan started to say something.

Then another voice sounded behind him.

Margaret.

“Give me the phone.”

My entire body stiffened.

“Evan.”

There was movement.

Then Margaret’s voice came through clearly.

“You are destroying my son.”

I almost laughed.

“No, Margaret.”

May you like

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

“You taught him how to destroy himself.”
