Chapter 5 - The Man Outside the Door

Nora immediately locked the deadbolt.

Evan knocked again.

“I just want to talk.”

I looked through the narrow window beside the door.

He stood on the porch in yesterday’s clothes.

His cheek was swollen.

For a second, a part of me almost felt sorry for him.

Then I remembered Maisie asking whether Daddy was mad.

The sympathy vanished.

“Go home, Evan.”

He heard me through the door.

“This is my marriage.”

“Then maybe you should have treated it like one.”

“I made mistakes.”

Tessa gave a humorless laugh behind me.

Evan heard it.

“Tessa?”

She didn’t answer.

His voice became sharper.

“You took things from Mom’s office.”

Tessa crossed her arms.

Nora whispered, “Do you want me to call the police?”

“Not yet.”

I walked closer to the door.

“What loan?”

Silence.

I continued.

“One hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars against our house.”

Still silence.

“What did you sign my name to?”

“I can explain.”

“Do it.”

“Not through a door.”

“The door is the only reason I’m willing to listen.”

He exhaled heavily.

“Mom’s business was struggling.”

“How long?”

“A few years.”

“How badly?”

“She was going to lose the building.”

“So you borrowed against our home?”

“I was going to pay it back.”

“You took money from Maisie.”

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Behind me, Tessa whispered, “Oh my God.”

I closed my eyes.

So he knew.

“How much did you take from her account?”

“I don’t know the exact number.”

“Try.”

“Maybe forty.”

“Thousand?”

He said nothing.

My chest tightened.

“My father gave that money to his granddaughter.”

“We needed liquidity.”

I actually laughed.

The sound frightened even me.

“You stole from a toddler and called it liquidity?”

“It wasn’t stealing.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you would have said no.”

The simplicity of his answer stunned me.

There it was.

The entire marriage reduced to one sentence.

He hadn’t lied because he was confused.

He hadn’t hidden things because they were complicated.

He had done it because he knew my answer and decided my answer didn’t matter.

“What is the guardianship file?”

The porch went completely quiet.

I looked at Tessa.

She looked back at me.

Evan finally spoke.

“That was nothing.”

“What was it?”

“Something Mom researched.”

“Why?”

“She worries.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

My voice hardened.

“About taking my child?”

“No.”

He answered too quickly.

I knew it.

Tessa knew it.

Even Nora knew it.

“Evan.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“What was it like?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“After Maisie was born, you were exhausted.”

I stared at the door.

“So?”

“You were overwhelmed.”

“So were millions of new mothers.”

“Mom thought maybe we needed a backup plan.”

“A backup plan for what?”

“If something happened.”

“What kind of something?”

He didn’t answer.

The blood drained from my face.

“You discussed taking custody of my daughter.”

“No.”

“You discussed guardianship.”

“Only hypothetically.”

“With your mother?”

“She’s Maisie’s grandmother.”

“And I am her mother.”

His voice rose.

“Nobody was trying to take her.”

Maisie began crying upstairs.

I immediately stepped away from the door.

Evan heard her.

“Let me see my daughter.”

“No.”

“You can’t keep her from me.”

“I’m keeping her away from the woman who hit her.”

“That’s not me.”

“You stood six feet away.”

His voice dropped.

“I froze.”

“No, Evan.”

I turned toward the stairs.

“You chose.”

Before I walked away, he said one final thing.

“If you report the loan, Mom could lose everything.”

I stopped.

May you like

Then I looked back toward the locked door.

“And what exactly did you think I was supposed to lose?”
