Chapter 1: The Girl Who Refused to Stay

Chapter 1: The Girl Who Refused to Stay
"Please... don't leave her here."
Ethan's trembling voice cut through the freezing night.
The man looked from his son to the little girl standing several feet away.
She couldn't have been older than seven.
Her oversized coat was gone—wrapped around Ethan's shoulders.
Snowflakes landed in her tangled brown hair.
Her lips had already begun turning blue.
"What's your name?" the man asked gently.
"Lily."
She didn't move any closer.
"I should go."
She turned before he could ask another question.
A strong hand stopped her—not by grabbing her, but by holding out the coat she had given away.
"I believe this belongs to you."
Lily shook her head.
"He needs it."
The man stared at her for several seconds.
People had spent years asking him for money.
For favors.
For influence.
No one had ever handed his son their only coat.
"My name is Daniel Blackwood," he said quietly.
"I'm Ethan's father."
Lily simply nodded.
The name meant nothing to her.
She had never read business magazines.
She didn't know Daniel Blackwood owned one of the largest investment companies in America.
To her...
He was just a father.
An ambulance pulled into the park.
Paramedics rushed toward Ethan.
One of them checked Lily's hands.
"Sweetheart, you're freezing."
"I'm fine."
"You have frostbite beginning."
"I'm okay."
Daniel noticed something.
Whenever an adult stepped closer...
Lily stepped back.
Like she expected to be hurt.
Or taken away.
A police officer approached.
"Sir, we'll need a statement from the girl."
Before the officer could continue...
Lily ran.
Fast.
Disappearing between the dark trees.
"Lily!" Ethan shouted weakly from the stretcher.
She never looked back.
Daniel watched the empty path long after she vanished.
