Chapter 2: The Search No One Expected

Chapter 2: The Search No One Expected

Three days passed.

Ethan recovered in a private hospital room.

Physically, he was improving.

Emotionally...

He wasn't.

Every morning he asked the same question.

"Did you find Lily?"

Every morning, Daniel had the same answer.

"No."

The city's security cameras had caught only fragments of her movements.

A small girl.

Worn shoes.

Walking alone beneath bridges.

Sleeping near subway entrances.

Then disappearing again.

It was as if New York itself was hiding her.

Daniel refused to stop searching.

His employees thought he was obsessed.

Perhaps he was.

Because every report revealed something new.

No missing-person report.

No active foster placement.

No family searching for her.

Only scattered sightings from soup kitchens and church volunteers.

A child surviving completely alone.

Meanwhile...

Lily believed she had escaped.

She returned to the abandoned subway platform where she sometimes slept.

She convinced herself rich people always forgot poor people.

She was wrong.

One snowy afternoon, she found a small paper bag beside the subway entrance.

Inside was hot soup.

Fresh bread.

Warm gloves.

And a handwritten note.

For the bravest girl I know.

From Ethan.

No address.

No signature.

Just those words.

Lily smiled for the first time in weeks.

She looked around.

No one.

The next day...

Another meal appeared.

Then another.

Never enough to make her dependent.

Always enough to remind her...

Someone remembered.

Daniel wasn't trying to buy her trust.

May you like

He was earning it.

One quiet act at a time.
