Chapter 15 - The Final GhostRichard sat paralyzed in the booth, staring at his phone as his entire world crumbled into dust.

"It's over, Richard," I said, standing up next to Amy. "Cynthia's lawyers are freezing all of 'Robert Mercer's' assets as we speak. But unfortunately for you, that's not your biggest problem tonight."
Richard looked up, his eyes wild and desperate. "What do you mean?"
I pointed toward the entrance of the hotel bar.
Walking through the double glass doors were three men. Two of them were uniformed Nashville police officers. The third was a man in a sharp grey suit with an FBI badge clipped to his belt.
Marcus had made a few calls.
"Richard Miller," the FBI agent announced, his voice carrying over the soft jazz playing in the bar. "You've been a very hard man to find."
Richard tried to run. He scrambled out of the booth, knocking over a tray of expensive martinis, and bolted for the fire exit. But he was a sixty-year-old man in Italian loafers. The two police officers tackled him before he made it ten feet, slamming him hard onto the polished marble floor.
"Richard Miller," the agent said, standing over him as the cuffs clicked shut. "You are under arrest for the embezzlement of four million dollars from the Sterling Pension Fund, wire fraud, and the attempted extortion of Connor and Amy Bradley."
Richard was hauled to his feet, his bespoke suit ruined, his face red and sweating. He looked back at Amy, expecting her to look away, to show some sign of daughterly pity.
She didn't. She stared right through him, her head held high.
"Amy, please!" he begged, completely humiliated in front of the entire bar. "I'm your dad! Don't let them do this! Connor, please!"
We didn't say a word. We watched as they dragged the screaming, crying con artist out into the pouring rain, shoving him into the back of a federal transport vehicle.
The FBI agent walked over to us, tipping his head respectfully to Amy. "Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs. Bradley. He's been on our Most Wanted white-collar list for a decade. He's looking at twenty years minimum. He won't ever bother you again."
"Thank you, Agent," Amy said, her voice steady.
I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her close. We walked out of the hotel together, stepping into the cool night air. The rain had stopped, leaving the city streets slick and glowing under the streetlights.
"How do you feel?" I asked softly as we reached our truck.
Amy paused, looking up at the sky. She took a deep, trembling breath, exhaling a lifetime of abandonment, shame, and fear.
"Free," she finally said, looking at me with eyes so bright they rivaled the city lights. "For the first time in my life, Connor, I feel completely free."
I kissed her, right there on the sidewalk, uncaring of who saw. We had faced the demons of our present and the ghosts of our past, and we had shattered them all.

As we drove back home to our sleeping son, I knew the war was finally over. The leeches were in cages, the extortionists were ruined, and the Bradley family was bulletproof.
