Chapter 5 - The Master StrokeTwo weeks later, the air in Nashville had turned crisp and cool, a welcome change from the suffocating heat of that terrible Friday.

I stood on the front porch of my house, wrapping a thick wool blanket around Amy’s shoulders. She was still frail, but the color had returned to her cheeks, and her eyes were bright again. Inside the house, little Frederick was babbling happily in his playpen, completely recovered.

"Are you sure you want to be here for this?" I asked softly, rubbing her arms.

Amy’s jaw set with a newfound strength. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

A sleek black Mercedes pulled into our driveway, followed by two police cruisers.

Aunt Shirley, Uncle Dave, and Cousin Mason stepped out of the Mercedes. They looked arrogant, dressed to the nines, flanked by a slick-looking defense attorney.

They thought they had won.

After Brenda’s arrest, they had pooled their money to hire a high-powered lawyer, confident they could beat the conspiracy charges. Their lawyer had demanded a meeting at my property to "discuss a civil settlement" and avoid a messy trial.

"Connor, Amy," the lawyer said smoothly as they approached the porch. "My clients are prepared to offer a formal apology for the... misunderstandings regarding your mother's actions. Furthermore, they are willing to sign non-disclosure agreements to keep this embarrassing family matter out of the press, provided you drop the civil suits against them."

Shirley crossed her arms, looking down her nose at Amy. "We're being generous, Connor. You don't have a shred of proof that we knew what Brenda was doing. It’s your word against ours."

I smiled. It was a cold, predatory smile.

"Actually, Shirley, I have Brenda's word," I said.

I pulled out my phone and tapped the screen. A Bluetooth speaker I had set up on the porch crackled to life.

It was the audio recording from the interrogation room. Marcus, being a federal agent, had legally recorded the entire conversation.

My mother’s desperate, frantic voice echoed across the front lawn: "Mason bought the rat poison! Shirley was going to get ten percent for keeping Amy distracted! I'll tell you everything!"

The smugness on Shirley’s face vanished instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror. Mason looked like he was about to vomit again.

"That's... that's inadmissible!" their lawyer stammered, suddenly sweating. "That was obtained under duress!"

"Actually," a new voice called out. Marcus stepped out from the front door, wearing his FBI windbreaker. "It was a voluntary statement made in the presence of federal law enforcement. And it gave us probable cause to execute search warrants on your homes this morning."

Marcus looked at Mason. "We found the receipts for the poison in your home office, Mason. Along with digital trails showing you researched how much dosage would be lethal without raising immediate suspicion."

Mason dropped to his knees on the grass, sobbing into his hands.

Marcus turned to Shirley and Dave. "And we found the burner phones you used to communicate with Arthur Vance, trying to negotiate a cut of the insurance money to pay off your own debts."

The two police officers stepped forward, unholstering their handcuffs.

"Shirley Bradley, Dave Bradley, Mason Bradley," the lead officer said, his voice echoing through the quiet neighborhood. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and insurance fraud."

As they were violently spun around and cuffed, Shirley began to wail, a high-pitched, agonizing sound. "Connor! You can't do this! We're blood! We're your family!"

I wrapped my arm tighter around Amy, holding my wife close against my chest.

"No," I said loudly, making sure they heard my final words before they were shoved into the back of the squad cars. "You're just the infection. And I just cut you out."

I watched the cruisers drive away, their sirens wailing into the distance, taking the last of the poison out of our lives forever. I turned to Amy, pressing a kiss into her hair.

"It's over," I whispered.

She looked up at me, a fierce, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "No, Connor. It's just beginning."

Here are chapters 6 through 10, continuing the high-stakes drama and escalating the tension as Connor fights to protect his family and secure their future.
