Chapter 11 - The Safe House That Wasn’t Safe

We moved Lily just before midnight.

No marked cars.

No hospital exit.

A service elevator took us underground.

From there, an armored vehicle transported us to a federal safe property outside the city.

Only four people knew the location.

Nolan.

Santos.

Me.

And Deputy Director Pike’s temporary replacement.

I did not trust the fourth person.

I barely trusted the first three.

Lily slept beside me during the drive.

She held the stuffed rabbit beneath her chin.

At the safe house, I checked every room myself.

Two exits.

Security cameras.

Reinforced windows.

Emergency radio.

The place should have felt secure.

It did not.

At 2:17 a.m., Lily woke screaming.

I ran into her room.

She pointed toward the window.

“Daddy.”

My heart stopped.

I looked outside.

Nothing.

“No one is there.”

“He was.”

“Did you see him?”

She shook her head.

“I dreamed him.”

I sat beside her.

She climbed into my lap.

“Is Daddy bad?”

There was no training for that question.

No federal handbook.

No tactical response.

Only a mother and a five-year-old trying to understand betrayal.

“Daddy made terrible choices.”

“Does he love me?”

I swallowed.

“Love should make you safe.”

She waited.

“Did he?”

I could not lie.

“No.”

Her face crumpled.

I held her.

A moment later, the security alarm sounded.

I lifted Lily immediately.

Nolan rushed into the hallway.

“Back room.”

“What happened?”

“Perimeter sensor.”

We moved.

Then the power died.

Emergency lights came on.

Red.

Dim.

A gunshot shattered the rear window.

Nolan pulled us behind a reinforced wall.

“Stay down.”

Another shot.

Then another.

Not random.

Controlled.

Professional.

Someone knew the layout.

Nolan returned fire through a protected angle.

I held Lily beneath me.

Her hands covered her ears.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t leave.”

“I won’t.”

A vehicle engine roared outside.

Seconds later, silence returned.

Backup arrived nine minutes afterward.

They found tire tracks.

Shell casings.

No shooter.

But attached to the outer fence was a small black envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Grant and Pike shaking hands.

Behind the photograph, a message had been written in black ink.

ONE OF THEM WILL TRADE THE OTHER.

Nolan stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

I looked at Lily.

Then at the photograph.

“It means somebody wants us to make Grant talk before Pike kills him.”

May you like

And suddenly Grant was no longer only our suspect.

He was also our bait.
