Chapter 8 - Beneath Lily’s Bed

The hidden compartment was exactly where Vanessa said it would be.
Federal agents removed a section of hardwood beneath Lily’s bed.
Below it sat a steel safe no larger than a briefcase.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Three burner phones.
A flash drive.
Insurance documents.
And photographs of me.
Hundreds of them.
Some had been taken outside my office.
Others showed me leaving grocery stores.
Picking Lily up from preschool.
Jogging in our neighborhood.
Meeting Nolan at a federal building.
Grant had been monitoring me long before my undercover assignment began.
But one envelope frightened me more than the rest.
It contained photographs of Lily.
School entrance.
Playground.
Pediatrician’s office.
Dance class.
On the back of one photograph, someone had written a date.
September 14.
Three weeks away.
Below the date were two words.
Secondary removal.
Nolan stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
I already knew.
“He planned to get rid of her too.”
Nolan said nothing.
My knees nearly failed.
Grant had never intended to send Lily to boarding school.
The lie was too ordinary.
Too harmless.
He needed Vanessa to believe Lily would simply disappear into some expensive institution.
The truth was probably far darker.
We examined the burner phones.
One contained messages between Grant and Kessler.
The language was coded.
But not coded well enough.
Package One referred to me.
Package Two referred to Lily.
Payment One referred to my insurance.
Payment Two referred to a trust account created after Lily’s disappearance.
Then we found the message that destroyed the last illusion I had about my marriage.
Kessler: Package One survived.
Grant: Impossible.
Kessler: Operation changed.
Grant: Fix it before she returns.
Kessler: Too much attention now.
Grant: Then I’ll handle home.
The message was dated two days earlier.
Grant had known I survived.
He knew I was coming back.
And something inside our house was supposed to happen before I arrived.
Nolan looked at me.
“We need to search everything.”
“Do it.”
“We also need to move you and Lily.”
I shook my head.
“Hospital security is enough tonight.”
“Evelyn.”
“I’m not leaving her.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
Nolan lowered his voice.
“Kessler is still out there.”
I understood.
Grant was under arrest.
Vanessa was cooperating.
But the man connected to the organization I had spent eight weeks infiltrating remained free.
And now he knew the operation had failed.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Lily asleep in her hospital bed.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
