Chapter 7 - The Camera Above the Pantry

The kitchen footage was worse than the audio.
It showed me gripping the counter while Sylvia followed me.
It showed the chair.
It showed me reaching toward it.
It showed Sylvia deliberately stepping between us.
Then it showed both hands striking my shoulders.
There was no stumble.
No attempt to steady me.
No misunderstanding.
My body hit the counter hard enough to shake a row of hanging utensils.
Then I collapsed.
David entered eighteen seconds later.
He looked at me.
Looked at my stomach.
And did nothing.
The footage showed me reaching for my phone.
It showed him taking it.
It showed him throwing it.
Then came the part Rebecca replayed twice.
David crouched in front of me.
His face was clearly visible.
His lips moved while the cameraâs microphone captured every word.
âI play golf with the sheriff.â
âIf you tell anyone what happened here, Iâll say youâre unstable.â
âMy colleagues will back me.â
âAnd youâre an orphan, Anna.â
Rebecca paused the video.
Nobody in the conference room spoke.
My father had refused to attend the evidence review.
He understood that his position could complicate everything.
Instead, I sat beside Rebecca while a detective and assistant district attorney reviewed the footage.
The detective looked at me.
âMrs. Cole.â
âAnna.â
He nodded.
âAnna, has your husband ever physically restrained you?â
I thought carefully.
âYes.â
âWhen?â
âLast spring.â
âWhat happened?â
âI tried to leave after an argument.â
I remembered David standing against the front door.
My keys in his hand.
âYouâre not driving while emotional.â
He had said it as though he were protecting me.
âWhat else?â
The detective asked.
I stared at my hands.
âHe controlled most of our money.â
Rebecca remained silent beside me.
âHe monitored the car.â
âLocation tracking?â
âYes.â
âHe knew whenever I went somewhere he hadnât expected.â
The detective took notes.
Piece by piece, my marriage stopped looking like a collection of unpleasant moments.
It became a pattern.
That frightened me more than the Christmas footage.
âHow did I not see this?â
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Rebecca answered quietly.
âBecause patterns are hardest to see when youâre living inside them.â
That afternoon, Sylvia was released pending further proceedings.
She was ordered not to contact me.
David received the same restriction while prosecutors continued reviewing the evidence.
By evening, the story had leaked.
Not my identity at first.
Just the headline.
PROMINENT ATTORNEY UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER CHRISTMAS DOMESTIC INCIDENT.
Then someone connected the family name.
By midnight, reporters were outside Davidâs firm.
By morning, they had discovered who my father was.
May you like
The story exploded.
And David decided that if he could no longer control me privately, he would destroy me publicly.
