Chapter 1 – The Reading of the Will

Chapter 1 – The Reading of the Will

The room remained so quiet that the ticking clock on the fireplace suddenly sounded deafening.

My husband, Daniel, still wore that smug smile.

He thought the attorney was exaggerating.

He thought this was another dramatic speech from a man who lived off paperwork.

"You've got to be kidding," Daniel scoffed. "She's just a kid."

The estate attorney calmly placed his leather briefcase on the dining table.

"No, sir."

He unlocked it, removed several thick folders, and carefully laid them beside the unopened envelope Claire had been staring at all morning.

"My name is Richard Holloway. I represented your late sister-in-law, Eleanor Bennett, for seventeen years."

He turned toward me.

"Mrs. Carter, before I begin, may I ask if the child is physically safe?"

I looked at Claire.

Her beautiful recital dress hung in ribbons.

Fresh strands of dark hair still clung to her tiny shoulders.

She nodded, trying to be brave.

"I...I'm okay."

Richard sighed.

"I'm sorry you had to experience this before hearing your mother's final wishes."

Daniel rolled his eyes.

"Can we stop pretending she's some princess?"

Richard ignored him.

Instead, he handed copies of a notarized document to everyone present—including the women from church and Claire's violin instructor.

"These witnesses may soon be asked to testify."

Daniel frowned.

"Testify about what?"

Richard finally looked directly into his eyes.

"About felony destruction of trust property."

The smile vanished from Daniel's face.

"What trust?"

Richard unfolded the first page.

"Upon Eleanor Bennett's death, every financial asset, investment account, property title, insurance policy, and controlling share in Bennett Medical Technologies transferred into the Eleanor Bennett Children's Trust."

Daniel blinked.

"What does that have to do with me?"

"Everything."

Richard continued.

"The sole beneficiary..."

He paused.

"...is Claire Bennett."

Claire looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Richard smiled gently.

"It means your mother left everything to you."

Daniel burst into laughter.

"A six-year-old owns millions?"

Richard answered without emotion.

"Forty-eight million dollars in liquid assets."

Silence.

"Three commercial buildings."

Silence.

"A forty-percent ownership stake in Bennett Medical Technologies."

Even deeper silence.

"And the family lake estate."

The church ladies gasped.

Claire's violin teacher covered her mouth.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No."

Richard slid one final document across the table.

"The trust specifically states that Claire's legal guardian will manage none of the assets personally."

Daniel relaxed.

"Good."

Richard wasn't finished.

"Instead..."

He looked at me.

"...the guardian receives an annual salary of two hundred thousand dollars for raising Claire."

Daniel's eyes widened.

Richard continued.

"Provided the guardian creates a safe, loving, and stable environment."

He closed the folder.

"Which brings us to today's events."

The deputy marshals stepped closer.

Richard nodded toward Claire.

"The recital dress purchased by the trust..."

He pointed at the shredded satin.

"...was trust property."

Then toward her hair.

"The physical assault occurred in front of multiple witnesses."

Daniel finally realized the trap.

"No..."

Richard spoke one last sentence.

"The trust contains an abuse clause."

I knew that clause.

I'd helped my sister write it two years earlier.

If anyone abused Claire—

They lost every possible right to remain in her home.

Even if they were married to her guardian.

Daniel looked at me.

"You knew."

May you like

I simply answered,

"Yes."
