Chapter 2 – Every Lie Comes Due

Chapter 2 – Every Lie Comes Due
Daniel's confidence collapsed faster than I had ever imagined.
He turned to me.
"Hannah...tell them this is a misunderstanding."
I didn't answer.
Because there was nothing left to misunderstand.
For two years I had watched him slowly reveal the man he truly was.
At first it had been little things.
Complaining about hospital bills after my sister's accident.
Calling Claire "temporary."
Asking when the inheritance would finally arrive.
Eventually he stopped hiding.
He treated my grief like an inconvenience.
He treated Claire like competition.
And today...
He had shown six witnesses exactly who he was.
Richard opened another folder.
"There is one additional matter."
Daniel swallowed.
"What now?"
Richard produced several bank statements.
"Eleanor hired a private accounting firm before her death."
Daniel stiffened.
Richard continued.
"They investigated repeated attempts to access Claire's future inheritance."
My stomach tightened.
I had never seen these documents.
"There were seven fraudulent loan applications submitted using anticipated trust assets as collateral."
Daniel's face turned white.
Richard looked at him calmly.
"Your signature appears on every one."
The deputy marshals exchanged glances.
One stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter, we'll need you to remain here."
Daniel exploded.
"I never got any money!"
"You attempted to."
Richard corrected him.
"Attempted fraud remains a crime."
Daniel pointed at me.
"She was supposed to support me!"
I laughed.
Not loudly.
Not cruelly.
Just once.
"I promised my sister something."
He stared.
"I promised I'd always choose Claire."
For the first time since I'd known him...
He realized I meant it.
The marshals placed him in handcuffs.
Claire watched silently.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't celebrating.
She simply asked,
"Is he leaving?"
I knelt beside her.
"Yes."
"For good?"
I wrapped my arms around her.
"For good."
She buried her face against my shoulder.
Only then...
Only after the front door closed behind Daniel...
Did she finally cry.
May you like
Not because she had lost him.
Because she finally knew she didn't have to be afraid anymore.
