Chapter 1: The Silence That Followed the Name
The word “sister” did not echo in the ballroom—it detonated.
Crystal chandeliers shimmered above frozen guests, but no one moved. Not the waiters. Not the musicians. Not even the security guards stationed near the marble pillars.
The heiress—Isabella—stood perfectly still, her hand still raised mid-gesture from the scolding she had just delivered. Her lips parted slightly, but no sound came out. The anger that had defined her seconds ago had collapsed into something unfamiliar.
Fear.
Behind her, the woman in the diamond necklace—her mother, Evelyn Hart—gripped the edge of the table so tightly her knuckles went white. Her face had gone pale in a way that makeup could not hide.
“Don’t…” Evelyn whispered, barely audible. “Don’t say that word.”
But it was too late.
The maid—kneeling now on the marble floor, her tray overturned beside her—slowly lifted her head. Blood traced a thin line down her cheek, mixing with silent tears. Her hands trembled, but her gaze never left Isabella.
“I didn’t want… to ruin her night,” she whispered again. “I just wanted to see her… once.”
A murmur broke through the crowd like cracking ice.
“Is she serious?”
“Did she say sister?”
“That’s impossible…”

Isabella stepped back, shaking her head. “No. No, that’s not—You’re lying.”
But even as she spoke, something deep inside her tightened painfully, as if a locked door had just been touched from the other side.
