Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Gilded Mask

Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Gilded Mask
Evelyn’s voice finally cut through the chaos.
“Enough.”
It wasn’t loud—but it was sharp enough to silence the entire hall.
She walked forward slowly, each step controlled, rehearsed… until she reached the maid. For a moment, she simply stared at her.
Like looking at a ghost she had spent years trying to forget.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Evelyn said coldly.
The maid flinched. “I didn’t come to destroy anything. I only wanted to see her birthday… from far away.”
Isabella turned toward her mother, confusion breaking into anger. “You know her?”
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she closed her eyes.
And when she opened them again, something in her expression had broken.
“Yes,” she said quietly. “She’s your sister.”
The ballroom erupted.
Gasps. Stunned whispers. A glass dropped somewhere near the back, shattering like punctuation.
Isabella stumbled backward as if struck. “That’s not possible… I’m the only daughter.”
Evelyn’s voice cracked for the first time. “No… you’re not.”
The maid—her voice barely holding together—looked at Isabella.
“We were born together,” she said. “But I wasn’t chosen.”
A heavy silence swallowed the room again.
Evelyn’s hands trembled now. “You were sick as a child,” she admitted. “We were poor then… I couldn’t raise two. I made a choice.”
“A choice?” Isabella repeated, horrified. “You mean you abandoned her?”
The word abandoned hit the air like a slap.
Evelyn’s eyes filled, but she didn’t deny it.
“I placed her in care,” she whispered. “But things went wrong after that. She disappeared from the system. I thought… I thought she was gone forever.”

The maid smiled faintly through tears.
“I survived.”
