Chapter 1: The Last Confession

Chapter 1: The Last Confession
The room no longer felt like a birthday party.
It felt like a courtroom.
No one moved.
The only sound came from the soft crackling of the birthday candles that continued melting into the untouched cake.
Julián stared at the two investigators.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
One of them calmly displayed his badge.
"No misunderstanding, sir."
The forensic investigator walked straight toward the kitchen island.
"Nobody touches anything."
Ofelia finally stood, clutching the black trash bag against her chest.
"This is private family property."
"It was," Ernesto replied quietly.
"Now it's evidence."
The advocate from the Women's Justice Center approached Valeria in the garden.
"Mrs. Salgado?"
Valeria instinctively stepped backward.
"You don't have to go back inside if you don't want to."
Her voice was gentle.
"We're here because your father contacted us three weeks ago."
Valeria blinked.
Three weeks?
She looked toward Ernesto through the glass doors.
He had known.
He had suspected everything long before today.
Inside the house, one investigator carefully removed the trash bag from Ofelia's trembling hands.
"No!"
She reached for it.
"It contains personal documents."
"Exactly."
The investigator opened the bag.
Inside sat a brown envelope.
Another folder.
A flash drive.
And dozens of financial statements.
The room grew silent again.
The investigator flipped through the paperwork.
Every page made Julián paler.
Forged signatures.
Loan applications.
Transfers from Valeria's personal account into accounts controlled by Ofelia.
Fake powers of attorney.
Even worse...
There were insurance documents listing Julián as sole beneficiary of a two-million-peso life insurance policy taken out only four months earlier.
Valeria had never signed it.
The forensic investigator photographed every document.
Then he looked at Ernesto.
"You were right."
Ernesto nodded.
"I wish I hadn't been."
Julián suddenly laughed.
"This proves nothing."
"I had access to her accounts because we're married."
"She agreed."
Ernesto slowly removed a small digital recorder from his jacket.
"I hoped you would say that."
He pressed play.
The room filled with Julián's own voice.
"If she refuses again, we'll just copy her signature."
Then Ofelia's voice followed.
"She's too frightened to report us."
Another recording.
"If she ever leaves, she'll leave with nothing."
Another.
"I'll keep hitting her until she learns who's in charge."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
One investigator looked directly at Julián.
May you like
"You are under investigation for domestic violence, coercive control, fraud, identity theft, and financial exploitation."
Julián's smile disappeared forever.
