Chapter 1: The Voices Beneath the Bed

Chapter 1: The Voices Beneath the Bed
I pressed one trembling hand over my mouth, praying they couldn't hear my breathing.
The cold hospital floor sent sharp pain through my body. Every muscle screamed after childbirth, but I didn't dare move.
Emily quietly climbed back into the chair beside my empty bed and pulled the blanket over the mattress, making it look as if I were sleeping.
A moment later, the doctor closed the door.
"Mrs. Harper is still sedated?" Linda asked.
"Enough that she won't remember much," the doctor replied calmly.
My blood froze.
Linda—the woman who had smiled through my pregnancy, who had insisted on being present for the delivery—was speaking as though I wasn't even a person.
"What about the consent forms?" she asked.
"They're in her file."
"I need everything finalized today," Linda said. "My son cannot find out."
There was a pause.
Then the doctor lowered his voice.
"The birth certificate can still be amended before it's processed."
I felt my heart pounding against the floor.
Amended?
Emily had been right.
Someone was trying to change something.
Something involving my newborn son.
Linda continued.
"After tonight, everyone will believe the baby had complications."
The room spun.
"No one will question a grieving mother who just lost her child."
Tears filled my eyes.
She wasn't talking about paperwork.
She was talking about stealing my baby.
The doctor hesitated.
"Are you certain?"
Linda's answer came without emotion.
"My grandson belongs with our family—not with her."
Silence.
Then I heard soft footsteps.
My baby's bassinet rolled across the room.
I nearly screamed.
Emily suddenly spoke.
"Grandma... where are you taking my brother?"
Linda answered sweetly.
"He's just going for a little examination."
Emily looked toward the bed.
Toward me.
She knew I was listening.
She simply nodded.
"Okay."
But I knew my daughter.
That single word meant one thing.
She was buying me time.
The door closed.
The hallway became quiet.
Only then did Emily whisper,
"They're gone."
I crawled out from beneath the bed, shaking so violently I could barely stand.
Emily threw her arms around me.
"They're trying to take him, Mom."
"I know."
"But Dad doesn't know."
I looked toward the empty bassinet.
"No," I whispered.
"And we're going to make sure he does."
For the first time in my life...

I realized the most dangerous person in the hospital wasn't a stranger.
It was my own mother-in-law.
