Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Medical File

Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden in the Medical File
Emily helped me into a wheelchair before anyone returned.
Every movement sent waves of pain through my body, but adrenaline carried me forward.
We slipped into the nurses' station while it was briefly unattended.
On the counter sat my medical chart.
Inside was a document bearing my signature.
Only...
It wasn't mine.
The handwriting looked similar.
The name was correct.
But one detail exposed the lie.
Whoever forged it had signed "Sarah Harper."
I had never changed my maiden signature.
Even after six years of marriage, every legal document I signed read:
Sarah Bennett.
Emily looked up.
"Mom... that's fake."
I nodded.
Someone had forged permission to remove my child.
Just then, footsteps echoed behind us.
We ducked into a nearby supply closet.
Through the cracked door we watched Linda and the doctor enter the station.
The doctor frowned.
"The chart was moved."
Linda's expression hardened.
"Find her."
A nurse hurried over.
"Mrs. Harper isn't in her room."
Linda's calm mask disappeared.
"What?"
"The baby is also missing from the nursery."
I stared.
Missing?
Neither Linda nor the doctor had him.
Another voice interrupted.
"Excuse me."
It was an elderly nurse.
"The infant was transferred by hospital security after an anonymous report that someone intended to abduct him."
Linda went pale.
"What security officer?"
The nurse frowned.
"The officer who showed proper authorization."
Linda whispered,
"There wasn't supposed to be any security."
My heart skipped.
Someone else had intervened.
Someone had discovered the plot.
Before Linda could react, another familiar voice echoed down the hallway.
"Sarah!"
My husband.
Daniel.
He rushed toward my empty room carrying flowers, completely unaware of the nightmare unfolding around him.
Linda immediately burst into tears.
"Daniel... something terrible happened."
She pointed toward the nursery.
"Your wife disappeared after giving birth... and she took the baby."
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
"What?"
The doctor added,
"We're afraid she's suffering from postpartum psychosis."
I felt as though the floor had vanished beneath me.
They weren't only stealing my son.
They were preparing to destroy my sanity.
Emily squeezed my hand.
"They're lying to Dad."
I took a deep breath.
"No."
I looked toward the hallway.
"They're lying to the wrong family."
Because Daniel had spent ten years as a homicide detective.
