Chapter 14 - The Missing File

Authorities copied every file from Danielâs tablet.
Hundreds of hours.
Voice recordings.
Video fragments.
Notes.
Photographs.
Most meant nothing.
Then investigators found a folder created by Dad.
It was hidden beneath a harmless application Daniel used for drawing.
The folder was called TRAIN SCHEDULES.
Daniel loved trains.
Nobody searching quickly would think twice about it.
Inside were seventeen audio files.
Dad had secretly recorded conversations with Marcus.
With Mom.
With Dr. Clay.
And with Evelyn Price.
The final recording was made nine days before Dad died.
Evelynâs voice was calm.
âYou are misunderstanding what you found.â
Dad answered.
âI found seven dead people.â
âYou found seven sick people who died.â
âI found identical transfers from their estates.â
Silence.
Then Evelyn laughed.
âYou should think about your family before making accusations.â
Dadâs voice hardened.
âAre you threatening my children?â
âIâm advising you to stop.â
âI already sent copies.â
âTo whom?â
Dad didnât answer.
Evelynâs voice changed.
âFor your sake, Thomas, I hope youâre bluffing.â
That was the end.
Harper replayed one sentence.
I already sent copies.
âTo whom?â I asked.
Nobody knew.
Dad had created redundancy.
He expected someone to destroy his local evidence.
But he never identified the recipient.
Daniel suddenly pointed toward the date.
âNine days.â
âYes.â
âDad went to church.â
Dad rarely attended church outside holidays.
But nine days before he died, he had gone alone.
I remembered because Mom made fun of him afterward.
Agents searched church security archives.
They found footage.
Dad entered carrying a large envelope.
Twenty minutes later, another person arrived.
A man in his seventies.
Retired Judge Samuel Bennett.
Dadâs older brother.
Our uncle.
A man we had not spoken to in nearly six years.
The family had always said Uncle Samuel and Dad hated each other.
Now I wondered whether that story was another lie.
I called him.
He answered after one ring.
âEmily.â
He knew my number.
âYou have Dadâs files.â
Silence.
Then.
âYes.â
âWhy didnât you come forward?â
May you like
His answer terrified me.
âBecause the last federal agent your father trusted is dead.â
