Chapter 6 - The Trap My Father Built

Dad had always been patient.
As a child, I thought it was kindness.
As an adult, I realized it was discipline.
He never reacted before understanding the entire problem.
The trust documents proved he had understood more than any of us knew.
He had discovered Momâs relationship with Marcus.
He had suspected his medication was being altered.
He had realized Daniel was being manipulated.
Instead of confronting them, he created a false version of the trust.
That false document suggested Mom would gain control of millions if Daniel were declared permanently incapable.
Dad wanted proof of motive.
He wanted to see whether she would act on it.
She did.
But he underestimated Marcus.
Detective Harper explained the theory carefully.
âYour father may have believed he had time.â
âHe didnât.â
âNo.â
Daniel sat beside me during the meeting.
He kept tracing a square on the table with his finger.
Four sides.
Again and again.
Harper noticed.
âWhat are you drawing?â
Daniel didnât answer.
I recognized it.
âThe basement room.â
Daniel nodded.
Then he typed on his tablet.
âFour cameras.â
Harper frowned.
âWe only found one.â
Daniel shook his head.
âFour.â
The police returned to the hidden basement room.
This time, Daniel went with us.
He stood at the doorway but would not enter.
He pointed.
One camera had been visible on the tripod.
A second was hidden inside a smoke detector.
A third was behind a vent.
The fourth was embedded inside an old clock.
All four cameras had memory cards.
Three had been wiped.
One had not.
The surviving footage showed Marcus and Mom inside the room two months before Dad died.
Marcus was standing beside the refrigerator.
Mom was crying.
Not fake crying.
Real crying.
âI canât keep doing this.â
Marcus stepped toward her.
âYou wanted freedom.â
âI didnât want murder.â
My entire body went numb.
Marcus lowered his voice.
âWe are past that now.â
Mom looked terrified.
âHeâs documenting everything.â
âThen we make him look unstable.â
âWhat about Emily?â
âShe believes you.â
âAnd Daniel?â
Marcus smiled.
âDaniel doesnât matter.â
Daniel stopped the video.
His face showed almost nothing.
But I felt his hand tighten around mine.
Detective Harper asked the technician to continue.
The recording resumed.
Mom said, âIf Tom dies now, theyâll investigate.â
Marcus replied, âNot if the numbers look right.â
âWhat numbers?â
âHis heart medication.â
Then he walked toward the camera.
The screen went black.
Mom had known.
Maybe she hadnât designed the murder.
Maybe Marcus had.
But she had known.
And she stayed.
Worse, after Dad died, she continued working with him.
She continued the plan against Daniel.
Her fear was not innocence.
It was cowardice.
I thought that was the worst thing I could learn about her.
I was wrong.
Because that evening, Harper received a call from the hospital.
Dadâs toxicology sample had been retested.
The concentration of digoxin in his blood was nearly four times the therapeutic level.

My father had not died from natural heart failure.
He had been poisoned.
