Chapter 15 - The Man Who Walked Away.
Victor Shaw agreed to meet Detective Morales with his attorney present.
Emily was not allowed in the interview.
She received the summary afterward.
Victor had worked in film and live-event safety for more than twenty years.
Ryan contacted him through a small production company and described the concept as a controlled family prank.
A stroller would roll approximately four feet on flat grass.
Victor would step into frame, stop it, and reveal that the entire moment had been staged.
No fire had been mentioned.
No slope had been mentioned.
No newborn was supposed to be inside the stroller.
Emily nearly dropped Rachel's phone when she heard that last part.
"What do you mean no newborn?"
Rachel looked equally disturbed.
"Victor says Ryan told him they'd use a weighted doll for the moving shot."
Emily sat down.
Everything changed again.
"Then why was Sophie in it?"
"That's the question."
Victor had arrived at Patricia's house at 8:30 Sunday morning.
He inspected the lawn.
He noticed the slope.
He noticed the stone fire pit.
He told Ryan he would not participate unless they moved the scene to the flat patio and used the doll they had discussed.
Ryan agreed.
Then Patricia came outside.
According to Victor, she became angry.
She said viewers would know the baby was fake.
Victor told her that was the point.
Nobody should use a real infant in a moving-stroller stunt.
Patricia called him dramatic.
Victor left.
Before leaving the neighborhood, he parked in his black SUV and called Ryan again.
He warned Ryan not to proceed.
Ryan promised him the idea was dead.
Victor drove away.
Then, several hours later, he saw a message in the Cole Family Moments creator group.
A draft title appeared.
Grandpa Saves Baby in Terrifying Backyard Accident.
Victor returned to the neighborhood.
He arrived after the rescue had already happened.
He watched from the corner because he was afraid his name would be tied to the stunt.
That was the black SUV Emily and Mark had seen.
"Why didn't he go to police immediately?"
Emily asked.
Rachel's expression was grim.
"Because he was protecting himself."
Another adult scared after the fact.
Emily was beginning to hate that phrase without anyone saying it.
Victor eventually came forward after hearing that a garage had been broken into and a child-services complaint had been filed.
He provided emails, text messages, and the original safety plan.
The emails showed Ryan repeatedly promising that Sophie would not be in the moving stroller.
They also showed Patricia arguing that a doll would make the content "useless."
Emily read Patricia's message twice.
People need to believe the baby is really there or the reaction has no value.
Something inside Emily went completely still.
This was no longer about a stupid idea that went wrong.
Someone had actively pushed to place Sophie into a scene a professional had rejected as unsafe.
Emily called Ryan through Rachel's office.
"Did you tell Victor we'd use a doll?"
Ryan answered after a long pause.
"Yes."
"Did you plan to use Sophie instead?"
"No."
"Then who changed it?"
Ryan's breathing became uneven.
"Mom."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Did you know?"
"Not at first."
"That's not an answer."
"I found out before the party started."
Emily stood so quickly the chair rolled backward.
"You knew Sophie was in that stroller."
"Obviously I knew she was in the stroller."
"You knew Patricia still wanted the stunt with Sophie in it."
Ryan did not answer.
"Ryan."
"Yes."
The word was almost inaudible.
Emily felt tears sting her eyes.
"And you still adjusted the brake."
"I thought I could control it."
"You were warned by a professional."
"I thought he was being overly cautious."
"He was being exactly cautious enough."
Ryan began crying.
Emily did not comfort him.
"Why did you cancel at 3:46?"
"Because the fire was lit."
"So the fire finally made it too dangerous for you?"
"Yes."
"But Sophie being inside didn't?"
Silence.
Emily waited.
Ryan had no answer.
She hung up.
Rachel looked at her carefully.
"That call may become relevant evidence."
Emily nodded.
"Good."
The custody issue changed quickly after Victor's statement.
Ryan's attorney withdrew the draft temporary petition.
Family services closed the immediate safety concern against Emily and opened a separate review involving Ryan's judgment.
Patricia's attorney advised her to stop contacting Emily.
For the first time in days, Emily slept four uninterrupted hours.
When she woke, Mark was in the kitchen making coffee.
Sophie slept peacefully beside the window.
The house felt quiet.
Almost normal.
Then Rachel called.
"Emily, we found something in the sponsorship contract that nobody noticed."
Emily sat down.
"What?"
"The contract wasn't payable to Cole Family Moments."
"Who was it payable to?"
Rachel paused.
"A company called Bright Harbor Media."
"I've never heard of it."
"Neither had I."
"So I looked it up."
Emily heard papers moving.
"Bright Harbor Media was formed six months ago."
"Its registered owner isn't Patricia."
"It isn't Ryan either."
Emily's pulse quickened.
"Then who owns it?"
