Chapter 9 - The Video That Existed Before the Accident.

Emily could not understand what she was looking at.
The draft title sat beneath a thumbnail that had no image yet.
GRANDPA SAVES BABY IN TERRIFYING BACKYARD ACCIDENT.
Created: 9:12 a.m.
The stroller had rolled at 3:49 p.m.
Emily looked at Jenna.
"Whose account is this?"
"Patricia started it last year."
"Why have I never seen it?"
"Ryan said you hated family-content stuff."
Emily almost laughed.
"I don't hate it."
She thought harder.
"I've never even been asked."
Jenna swallowed.
"They mostly post old family stories, backyard recipes, surprise reunions, things like that."
"And Sophie?"
Jenna looked uncomfortable.
"Her newborn pictures did really well."
Emily's face went cold.
"What newborn pictures?"
Jenna opened the account.
There was Sophie.
Sleeping in a white blanket.
There was Sophie again in Ryan's arms.
There was a close-up of Sophie's tiny hand curled around Patricia's finger.
Emily had sent those pictures privately in the family group chat.
She had never agreed to have them posted publicly.
One photo had more than eighty thousand reactions.
"Take me to the draft."
Jenna opened the creator dashboard.
The scheduled draft contained only a title, tags, and a note.
Need wide shot, hero run, baby safe at end.
Emily's stomach turned.
Those words described exactly what had happened.
Mark crossed the diner and sat beside Emily without asking.
"Show me."
Jenna handed him the phone.
He read the note.
His face became still.
"Who created this draft?"
"The account shows Patricia as the owner, but Ryan has editor access."
"Can you tell which one made it?"
"Not from this screen."
Mark looked at Emily.
"Screenshot everything."
Jenna did.
Then she opened the short video she had mentioned.
It began at 3:42 p.m.
Jenna had been filming paper lanterns and dessert trays.
In the background, Ryan crossed beneath the patio camera.
He dragged a white chair against the wall.
He stepped onto it.
His hands reached toward the camera cable.
The clip ended before the cable came loose.
But the intent was difficult to explain away.
Emily covered her mouth.
"He lied to me."
Jenna nodded.
"There's more."
The next clip was only seven seconds long.
Ryan stood near the stroller with his back to Jenna.
He appeared to crouch for a moment.
Then Patricia walked into frame and said something too quiet for the phone microphone to capture.
Ryan stood quickly.
The clip ended.
"Can you zoom?"
Jenna did.
A red screwdriver handle was visible in Ryan's back pocket.
Mark whispered a curse.
Emily said nothing.
She felt past anger.
Her mind had become strangely clear.
"Send these to me."
Jenna nodded.
"Already did."
Emily forwarded them to Detective Morales and Rachel Kim.
Then she looked at Jenna.
"Why would Ryan plan a video about a rescue?"
Jenna's hands tightened around her coffee cup.
"The page is losing money."
"What does that have to do with Sophie?"
"Ryan handles sponsorships."
"And?"
"A baby video got their biggest numbers ever."
Emily stared at her.
Jenna continued reluctantly.
"Patricia told him they needed something emotional."
"Something emotional?"
"She said people scroll past normal family stuff."
Mark's voice was low.
"Are you saying they staged this?"
"I don't know."
"Jenna."
"I really don't."
She wiped her eyes.
"I heard Ryan say they needed a moment people couldn't ignore."
Emily felt physically ill.
"When?"
"Friday."
"Two days before the party?"
"Yes."
The waitress approached, saw their faces, and quietly turned away.
Emily looked back at the scheduled draft.
Hero run.
Baby safe at end.
That phrase was the worst part.
It suggested the baby was never supposed to be harmed.
Someone may have planned a controlled scare.
A few feet of movement.
A dramatic grab.
A camera-ready rescue.
Except the lawn sloped more sharply toward the fire pit than it appeared from the patio.
And Mark, not Ryan, had reached the stroller first.
Emily suddenly remembered Ryan's expression when he returned carrying ice.
He had looked confused.
Not horrified.
Confused.
As if the wrong person had been standing in the wrong place.
Emily whispered.
"He was supposed to save her."
Mark turned toward her.
"What?"
"The draft says hero run."
She looked at Jenna.
"Ryan was supposed to be the hero."
Jenna went pale.
Emily's phone rang.
Ryan.
She did not answer.
A text followed.
I know Jenna talked to you.
Then another.
Please don't send that video to anyone until I explain.
May you like
Emily looked at Mark.
"Too late."
