Chapter 2 – A Father Before a Groom

Chapter 2 – A Father Before a Groom

The guests looked confused as I walked toward the ceremony.

Not alone.

Ellie held my hand.

Her eyes were still red from crying.

The broken bathroom lock had left a scrape across her tiny arm.

Whispers spread through the crowd.

"What happened?"

"Why are they late?"

Vanessa stood beneath the flower arch wearing a designer wedding gown that cost more than my first car.

She smiled the moment she saw me.

Then she noticed Ellie.

Her smile faltered.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The officiant cleared his throat.

"We're gathered here today—"

"No."

My voice echoed across the silent garden.

"We're not."

Every head turned.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Daniel..."

"What happened to Ellie?"

Her expression remained perfectly composed.

"I don't know what you mean."

I looked down at my daughter.

"Sweetheart."

"You don't have to be afraid."

Ellie squeezed my hand.

"She locked me in the bathroom."

Gasps rippled through the audience.

Vanessa's face changed instantly.

"Oh my God."

She pressed a hand against her chest.

"She's confused."

"Daniel, children imagine things."

Ryan stepped forward.

"We found Vanessa's earring inside the locked bathroom."

Silence.

Vanessa looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

Then back to Ellie.

"I only wanted a few quiet minutes before the ceremony."

"You misunderstood."

Ellie shook her head.

"No."

"You said Daddy wouldn't need me anymore."

That sentence broke something inside me.

Vanessa reached for my arm.

"Daniel, please."

I stepped away.

"My daughter doesn't lie."

The guests exchanged uneasy glances.

My mother stood.

"So it's true?"

Vanessa's carefully constructed smile finally cracked.

"You don't understand."

She raised her voice.

"I've spent two years competing with a ghost."

"Emma."

"Everything is always Emma."

"Every room."

"Every conversation."

"And then Ellie..."

She pointed toward my daughter.

"She never stopped reminding him."

The entire wedding fell silent.

Vanessa kept talking.

"I wanted one day."

"One perfect day."

"Without his dead wife."

"Without his child stealing every ounce of attention."

The words hung in the air.

Ugly.

Unfiltered.

Honest.

I looked at the woman I thought I loved.

For the first time...

I realized I had never truly known her.

I removed my wedding ring.

Then remembered.

I had never worn one.

Instead, I removed the gold band meant for the ceremony from my pocket.

May you like

I placed it gently on the altar.

"This wedding is over."
