Chapter 3 – My Greatest Promise

Chapter 3 – My Greatest Promise

No one moved.

Even the musicians stopped playing.

Vanessa burst into tears.

"You can't embarrass me like this!"

I looked at her quietly.

"You embarrassed yourself."

She grabbed my sleeve.

"I love you!"

I answered with the calmest voice I had ever used.

"If loving me required hurting my daughter..."

"...then you never loved me at all."

Security escorted Vanessa and several furious members of her family from the estate.

The guests slowly began leaving.

Some hugged Ellie.

Others simply shook their heads in disbelief.

Hours later, the decorations remained.

Thousands of roses.

Crystal glasses.

A wedding dinner no one would eat.

Ryan walked over carrying two slices of cake.

"So..."

He smiled sadly.

"Worst wedding ever?"

I laughed for the first time all day.

"Probably."

Ellie tugged on my jacket.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Did I ruin everything?"

I knelt until we were eye to eye.

"No."

"You saved us."

She frowned.

"I did?"

"You helped me see the truth before it was too late."

Tears filled her eyes again.

"So..."

"You kept your promise?"

I smiled.

"I always will."

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

"I love you."

"I love you more."

Six Months Later

The estate garden looked very different.

No wedding decorations.

No expensive flowers.

Just a picnic blanket beneath the old oak tree.

Ryan tossed a football with Ellie while my mother unpacked sandwiches.

Life wasn't perfect.

It never would be.

Emma would always be part of our story.

But grief no longer felt like a prison.

It felt like love that had found a new place to live.

Ellie ran toward me carrying another Lego box.

"Daddy!"

"Castle time?"

I laughed.

"Absolutely."

As we began building, she looked up with that familiar smile.

"The promise still counts, right?"

I kissed the top of her head.

"It isn't just a promise anymore."

"It's who I am."

Because before I was a husband...

Before I was a businessman...

Before I was anything else...

I was her father.

May you like

And I always would be.

The End.
