Chapter 15 - The Woman Who Came Back

Claire did not run toward her mother.
She did not cry out.
She did not collapse.
She simply stood in the doorway and stared.
Laura Bennett looked older.
Of course she did.
Twelve years could not disappear because someone returned from the dead.
Fine lines marked her face.
Her hair carried gray.
But she was unmistakably Claire’s mother.
Laura took one step forward.
Claire raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
Laura stopped.
Walter whispered her name.
“Laura.”
Laura looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
Walter’s face twisted with anger.
“You’re sorry?”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You let Claire bury you.”
Laura’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
Claire finally spoke.
“Why?”
Laura looked at her daughter.
“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”
Claire laughed.
It sounded terrible in the silent room.
“Of course.”
Laura flinched.
“What?”
“That’s everybody’s answer.”
Claire pointed around the room.
“Grandpa lied to protect me.”
“Dad disappeared to protect me.”
“You pretended to die to protect me.”
“Did anyone ever think maybe I deserved the truth?”
Laura lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Claire swallowed hard.
“Then start now.”
Laura nodded.
“The accident was staged.”
Walter stared.
“I saw the body.”
“No.”
“You saw a sealed casket.”
Walter stopped.
Claire remembered.
She had never been allowed near the body.
Adults had told her the accident was too severe.
Laura continued.
“Samuel helped me enter witness protection.”
“Federal?”
“Unofficial.”
Nora’s expression hardened.
“That’s not a thing.”
Laura looked at her.
“It was when Harbor controlled half the people who would have processed the paperwork.”
Nora did not respond.
Claire asked, “Why stay gone after the danger passed?”
Laura looked toward Michael.
“It never passed.”
Claire followed her gaze.
Her parents exchanged an expression Claire could not interpret.
“You two were working together?”
Michael nodded.
“For years.”
Claire laughed again.
“Fantastic.”
Laura stepped closer.
“Claire.”
“No.”
She held up her hand.
“I need answers before feelings.”
Laura nodded.
“What do you want to know?”
“Are you the administrator?”
“No.”
“Is Dad?”
“No.”
“Marcus?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
Laura hesitated.
“That depends which Daniel you mean.”
Walter frowned.
“There is only one.”
Laura shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone went silent.
“Daniel Cross was an identity used by two men.”
Ryan’s face appeared on a video call Evelyn had placed on the conference screen.
He stared.
“You’re kidding.”
Laura looked at him.
“Katherine discovered it.”
Ryan’s expression changed at his mother’s name.
Laura continued.
“The original Daniel Cross was Walter’s partner.”
“The second was his younger brother.”
Walter stared.
“Daniel never had a brother.”
“Yes, he did.”
“What was his name?”
Laura looked toward Thomas.
Thomas answered.
“David.”
Walter turned.
“You knew?”
Thomas nodded.
“Recently.”
Laura explained.
“David Cross used Daniel’s credentials for years.”
“Sometimes both men appeared in different places under the same identity.”
“That is how money moved without timelines matching.”
Claire thought of photographs.
Witness reports.
Contradictory sightings.
Two Daniels explained several impossibilities.
“Which one is Ryan’s possible father?”
Laura looked at Ryan on the screen.
“Neither.”
Ryan leaned back.
“Great.”
Walter closed his eyes.
Ryan noticed.
“You?”
Laura looked at Walter.
“The DNA test will answer that.”
Evelyn’s phone beeped.
She looked at the screen.
“Actually, it already did.”
Every eye turned toward her.
“The private laboratory completed the comparison.”
Ryan stared.
“And?”
Evelyn looked at Walter.
“Walter is not Ryan’s biological father.”
Walter exhaled.
Ryan laughed quietly.
“Okay.”
Claire could not tell whether he was relieved or disappointed.
“Then who is?”
Laura answered.
“Samuel Reed.”
Silence.
Ryan stared at the screen.
“The guy in federal prison?”
“Yes.”
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
“Of course he is.”
Even Claire laughed this time.
The situation had become too absurd for any other reaction.
Walter looked at Laura.
“You knew?”
“Katherine told me.”
“Why didn’t Samuel?”
“He wasn’t sure.”
Ryan interrupted.
“I’m done caring for today.”
Laura almost smiled.
Claire returned to the important question.
“Who is Harbor’s administrator?”
Laura looked at the three circles on Claire’s phone.
“I don’t know.”
Claire stared.
“You came back because Harbor activated.”
“Yes.”
“You’ve spent twelve years investigating.”
“Yes.”
“And you don’t know?”
Laura shook her head.
“That’s why I stayed hidden.”
Michael added, “We traced commands for years.”
“They came from multiple locations.”
Laura continued.
“We eventually realized the administrator wasn’t a person.”
Nora frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Laura looked at Claire’s phone.
“It’s an automated protocol.”
“Artificial intelligence?”
“Not exactly.”
“A rules engine.”
“Built to act based on triggers.”
Walter looked horrified.
“Charles.”
Laura nodded.
“Your brother created an administrator that could operate without any one person controlling it.”
Claire stared at the transfer request.
“So nobody requested this?”
Laura shook her head.
“Harbor did.”
“Why?”
“Because all three heirs activated.”
Claire felt cold.
“What does it want?”
Laura looked toward tomorrow’s transfer timer.
“To complete Charles Bennett’s final instruction.”
Walter whispered, “Which was?”
Laura opened a file.
Three words were printed across the first page.
CONTINUITY THROUGH CONTROL.
Claire read them.
Then Laura explained.
“If tomorrow’s transfer completes, Harbor will move every compromised account into one centralized structure.”
Thomas frowned.
“That sounds like consolidation.”
“It is.”
“Who owns the structure?”
Laura looked at Claire.
“The three heirs.”
Ryan’s voice came through the screen.
“So Claire, Walter, and me inherit a criminal empire?”
Laura shook her head.
“Worse.”
Walter asked, “What’s worse?”
Laura’s voice became quiet.
“You inherit the leverage to control everyone the network ever compromised.”
Claire looked at the clock.
The transfer would open in seventeen hours.
“If we refuse?”
Laura hesitated.
“Harbor releases everything.”
Nora stared.
“Publicly?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Laura looked at the enormous archive file.
“Enough to destroy hundreds of careers.”
Thomas whispered, “Some innocent people could get caught in it.”
Laura nodded.
Claire understood the trap.
Accept power.
Or unleash chaos.
Her phone buzzed.
The administrator had sent another message.
THREE HEIRS.
ONE DECISION.
TRANSFER OR RELEASE.
Claire looked at her mother.
“How long do we have?”
May you like
Laura stared at the countdown.
“Until nine tomorrow morning.”
