Chapter 9 - Box 22B

First County Bank opened at nine.

Claire arrived at eight fifty-five.

Walter argued until eight forty.

Thomas argued until eight forty-seven.

Evelyn argued until eight fifty-two.

Claire ignored all three.

The message had been clear.

Claire must open it alone.

That did not mean she had come without protection.

Walter waited across the street.

Evelyn sat in a parked delivery van.

Marcus watched from a coffee shop.

Thomas and Ryan remained at the mansion.

At least that was the plan.

Claire entered the bank.

The manager greeted her almost immediately.

“Ms. Bennett?”

Claire stopped.

“I didn’t give anyone my name.”

The manager looked confused.

“A gentleman called ahead.”

“What gentleman?”

“He didn’t say.”

Claire considered leaving.

Then she remembered her mother.

Every person in Laura’s life had told her to wait.

Claire was finished waiting.

“I’m here for box 22B.”

The manager’s expression changed.

“That box hasn’t been accessed in years.”

“Whose name is on it?”

He checked his tablet.

“Samuel Reed.”

Claire showed the key.

The manager hesitated.

“Legally—”

“The box agreement names Laura Bennett as secondary holder.”

The manager looked surprised.

Claire had found the information in her mother’s notebook just before leaving.

She showed identification.

Minutes later, she stood inside the private vault.

Box 22B slid from the wall.

The manager left.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a thick envelope.

A small audio recorder.

A sealed DNA kit.

And another key.

Claire touched nothing at first.

Then the audio recorder activated by itself.

A voice began speaking.

“Claire.”

She froze.

It was Samuel Reed.

At least that was what the recording claimed.

“If Laura’s daughter is hearing this, everyone else probably failed.”

Claire sat.

“Daniel Cross built the network.”

That contradicted what the caller had suggested.

“He had help.”

Claire listened.

“The emergency contracts were only seed money.”

“Seed money for what?”

The recorded Samuel seemed almost to answer.

“They purchased influence.”

Claire thought of Thomas’s explanation.

Police.

Judges.

Officials.

Samuel continued.

“Laura found the financial structure.”

“Katherine found the human structure.”

“Marcus found the political structure.”

“And Walter found the man at the center.”

Claire leaned closer.

“Who?”

The recording paused.

Then Samuel said, “Walter never told Laura the name.”

Claire felt anger.

“Because the name belonged to someone she trusted.”

Claire gripped the chair.

The recording continued.

“If Walter is alive, ask him about Project Harbor.”

Then the recorder clicked off.

Claire stared at it.

Project Harbor.

She had never heard those words.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

LEAVE NOW.

Claire stood.

Another message.

DO NOT USE THE FRONT DOOR.

Claire looked toward the vault entrance.

The manager was gone.

She grabbed the envelope, recorder, DNA kit, and key.

A side emergency exit was marked at the back.

She pushed through it.

An alarm immediately sounded.

Claire entered an alley.

A man stepped from behind a dumpster.

She raised the metal box.

“Stay back.”

The man lifted both hands.

It was Ryan.

Claire stared.

“What are you doing here?”

“Saving you.”

“By ignoring the plan?”

“Apparently.”

He pointed toward the street.

“A black SUV has been parked near the front entrance for twenty minutes.”

Claire’s phone buzzed again.

HE FOLLOWED YOU.

Claire looked at Ryan.

“Did you tell anyone you were coming?”

“No.”

“Your father?”

“No.”

“Walter?”

“No.”

Evelyn appeared at the end of the alley.

“There you are.”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

DO NOT GIVE HER THE ENVELOPE.

Claire looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn approached.

“We need to move.”

Claire held the envelope tighter.

“What’s wrong?”

“Someone entered the bank through the employee entrance.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Ryan looked at Claire.

“We should go.”

Evelyn reached for the envelope.

Claire stepped away.

“I’ll carry it.”

Evelyn noticed.

“Claire.”

“I said I’ll carry it.”

For the first time, Evelyn looked offended.

Then she nodded.

“Fine.”

They reached the van.

Walter was already inside.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“What was in the box?”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

Then Walter.

She remembered the text.

Do not give her the envelope.

Why?

The stranger could be manipulating her.

Or warning her.

Claire made a decision.

“Nothing useful.”

Walter frowned.

“Claire.”

“There was an old recorder.”

“What did it say?”

“Ask Walter about Project Harbor.”

Walter’s face changed.

Claire knew immediately the phrase was real.

“What is Project Harbor?”

Walter looked toward Evelyn.

That was another answer.

Evelyn knew too.

Claire turned on her.

“You know?”

Evelyn closed the van door.

Walter rubbed his forehead.

“Project Harbor was an internal investigation.”

“Into Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Walter looked directly at Claire.

“Your father.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“My father died when I was five.”

Walter shook his head.

“That’s what you were told.”

Claire stared at him.

The day had already resurrected one parent in photographs.

Now Walter was tearing open another grave.

“You said he died overseas.”

“I said he never came home.”

Claire’s voice rose.

“You let me believe he was dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Walter looked toward the recorder in her hand.

“Because your father was the man Project Harbor was created to find.”

Claire whispered, “What did he do?”

Walter did not answer.

The van suddenly stopped.

Evelyn looked toward the driver.

“What happened?”

No response.

Walter opened the divider.

The driver’s seat was empty.

The van had stopped in the middle of an abandoned service road.

Claire’s phone buzzed.

May you like

A final message appeared.

NOW YOU’RE READY TO MEET YOUR FATHER.
