Chapter 1: The Gates Closed First

Chapter 1: The Gates Closed First
The first sound was not thunder.
It was the metallic click of every electronic lock engaging at once.
The grand iron gates at the entrance of the estate slid shut with a slow, mechanical force that echoed across the rain-soaked grounds.
Julian frowned.
"What was that?"
Chloe rolled her eyes.
"Probably another security check."
But before she could finish speaking, every chandelier inside the mansion flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every screen mounted throughout the estate lit up with the same message.
PROPERTY OWNERSHIP VERIFICATION IN PROGRESS.
The household staff froze.
The head butler stared at the display, his face draining of color.
"That's impossible..."
A sharp beep interrupted the silence.
ACCESS RIGHTS UPDATED.
One by one, the biometric scanners beside every door turned from green...
...to red.
Julian stepped toward the entrance.
The scanner rejected him immediately.
ACCESS DENIED.
"What?"
He tried again.
Nothing.
Chloe laughed nervously.
"This system is broken."
She placed her hand on the scanner herself.
Another cold mechanical voice answered.
ACCESS DENIED.
AUTHORIZED RESIDENT STATUS REMOVED.
Her smile disappeared.
"What kind of joke is this?"
Outside, dozens of black luxury vehicles rolled silently through the rain.
Not police.
Not reporters.
Corporate security.
Each car carried the silver crest of Hawthorne International.
The drivers exited in perfect formation.
Umbrellas opened simultaneously.
In the center walked one man.
Arthur Hawthorne.
Elara's father.
The billionaire whose companies quietly owned half the city's skyline.
He stopped only long enough to place his coat around Elara's shoulders.
"You've been standing in the rain too long."
She smiled faintly.
"I'm alright now."
Arthur looked toward the mansion.
His expression became unreadable.
"So..."
"They finally showed me who they really are."
He nodded once.
"Good."
Then he walked toward the front entrance.
The security guards who had refused Elara only minutes earlier immediately lowered their heads.
"Welcome home, Mr. Hawthorne."
Chloe stared in disbelief.
"Who... who is he?"
Arthur didn't even acknowledge her.
He simply held out a folder.
"The lease agreement."
The butler accepted it with trembling hands.
After reading the first page, he nearly dropped it.
"Sir..."
Arthur's voice remained calm.
"This estate has never belonged to the Ashford family."
"It has always belonged to Hawthorne International."
"Their occupancy agreement expired exactly thirty seconds ago."
Silence.
The rain was suddenly the only sound anyone could hear.
Julian looked at Elara.
His face had turned completely pale.
"You... you knew?"
She looked at him for several long seconds.
May you like
"I hoped you would love me without needing to know."
"You failed that test."
