Chapter 2: Everything They Owned Was Borrowed

Chapter 2: Everything They Owned Was Borrowed

"No..."

Julian shook his head.

"There has to be some mistake."

Arthur slowly opened another document.

"There isn't."

He handed copies to the family's lawyers, who had arrived moments earlier.

"The Ashford family accepted financial rescue twelve years ago."

"The conditions were simple."

"They would manage the estate."

"They would lease the company headquarters."

"They would retain the family name."

"But they would never own any of it."

Chloe's face twisted with anger.

"That's impossible!"

"My grandfather built this family!"

Arthur met her eyes.

"Your grandfather built a dream."

"My company paid off his debts."

"My investments prevented your bankruptcy."

"My lawyers protected your reputation."

"My capital rebuilt your business."

He paused.

"You mistook generosity for weakness."

The words hit harder than any insult.

Within minutes, accountants entered the mansion.

Digital records were backed up.

Artwork was catalogued.

Luxury vehicles were tagged for recovery.

The family portraits that had hung proudly for decades were carefully removed from the walls.

Employees stood silently as inventories were completed.

Many had worked for Arthur's company all along.

They simply never revealed it.

Julian walked toward Elara.

"I didn't know."

"You have to believe me."

"I never cared about your money."

She looked at him sadly.

"I know."

"You cared about keeping yours."

He had no answer.

Behind him, Chloe suddenly screamed.

"They can't do this!"

She grabbed a priceless crystal vase and hurled it across the marble floor.

It shattered instantly.

Security officers stepped forward.

"Miss Ashford."

"You are now damaging corporate property."

She froze.

For the first time in her life...

...no one defended her.

Arthur turned toward the butler.

"Please escort the Ashford family from the premises."

The old butler hesitated.

Then, with tears in his eyes, he bowed respectfully.

"Yes, Mr. Hawthorne."

He looked at Julian.

May you like

"I'm sorry, sir."

"But this house was never yours."
