Chapter 16 - The Missing Minute
My father’s video lasted fourteen minutes.
He explained that Daniel had requested a private meeting to discuss the trust loans.
Peter had warned him that Daniel was desperate.
My father had already contacted a federal investigator.
He intended to offer Daniel one final opportunity to confess to financial fraud.
He also revealed that he had placed a second camera inside his office.
Daniel knew about the visible security system.
He did not know about the camera hidden inside the antique clock.
The video ended with my father standing.
Someone knocked on the door.
The clock camera continued recording.
Daniel entered carrying coffee.
Their conversation matched the audio file we had already heard.
Then Daniel moved toward the desk.
His body blocked the cup for less than a minute.
When he stepped away, the liquid had changed color slightly.
My father did not drink it immediately.
He ordered Daniel to leave.
After Daniel left, Evelyn entered through the adjoining records room.
She told my father he had destroyed her family.
She accused him of turning Daniel against his heritage.
My father answered calmly.
“Daniel did not need my help becoming cruel.”
Evelyn picked up the coffee.
For one second, I thought she would pour it away.
Instead, she carried it to my father.
“You always believed you could save everyone,” she said.
“Let us see whether anyone comes to save you.”
She watched him drink.
Ten minutes later, my father reached for his chest.
Evelyn did not call for help.
She stood beside him while he collapsed.
Then Daniel returned.
Together, they removed the coffee cup and replaced it with a clean one.
Dr. Shaw entered six minutes later.
He waited before calling emergency services.
The entire murder had been recorded.
My father’s final minute showed him looking toward the hidden camera.
He knew it was there.
He knew I might one day see him die.
His lips moved.
The audio was faint.
Nora increased the volume.
My father whispered four words.
“Do not become them.”
I covered my mouth.
Pain moved through me, but beneath it was something stronger.
Certainty.
The video was sent directly to the district attorney.
Arrest warrants were issued for Evelyn and Daniel.
Police surrounded the estate.
Evelyn attempted to escape through the service corridor.
Marta recognized the passage she was using and directed officers to the garden exit.
They arrested Evelyn beside the greenhouse.
She did not resist.
As officers placed her in the car, she looked at me.
“You think your father was innocent?”
“No,” I replied.
“I think he was human.”
“That makes him better than you ever allowed Daniel to become.”
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“My son loved you.”
“No.”
“He wanted to own me.”
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
Then she said something I had not expected.
“Daniel is not holding Miles for the company.”
“What does he want?”
“The original video.”
“Why?”
“Because Lucas told him you found it.”
“Where is Daniel?”
