Chapter 9 - My Father’s Last Night

I listened to the recording three times.

Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood it.

Each time, Daniel’s words remained the same.

Dr. Shaw had provided medication.

Evelyn had arranged a private meeting.

Daniel had placed something in my father’s coffee.

The recording did not capture the act itself.

It captured the planning.

Peter’s voice could also be heard.

He objected.

He warned Daniel that they were talking about murder.

Daniel answered with a sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.

“It isn’t murder if his heart was already waiting to fail.”

Nora stopped the recording.

Marta sat beside me.

Marcus stood near the window.

No one tried to comfort me with empty words.

My father had died in his office at 11:42 p.m.

Daniel had called me from the hospital.

He held me while I cried.

He chose the suit my father wore in his coffin.

He gave a speech at the funeral about loyalty, family, and gratitude.

Then he used the company my father financed to steal from the foundation bearing his name.

I walked into the bathroom and locked the door.

For ten minutes, I sat on the floor and allowed myself to break.

I cried for my father.

I cried for the woman I had been.

I cried because eleven years of my marriage had become evidence in a criminal case.

Then I washed my face and returned to the dining room.

“What can we prove?” I asked.

Nora studied me carefully.

“We can prove conspiracy to commit financial fraud.”

“We can prove identity theft.”

“We can prove attempted unlawful confinement.”

“We can establish probable cause concerning your father’s death.”

“But not murder.”

“Not yet.”

Peter agreed to meet us that afternoon.

He arrived with two attorneys.

For years, he had served as Daniel’s closest friend and chief financial officer.

He looked exhausted.

“I should have gone to the police,” he said.

“Yes,” I replied.

“I was afraid.”

“So was my father.”

Peter lowered his eyes.

He admitted witnessing Dr. Shaw hand Daniel a small vial on the night my father died.

He saw Daniel enter my father’s office carrying coffee.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel emerged alone.

Peter heard my father collapse after Daniel left.

“Why did you stay silent?”

“Daniel had evidence of my own financial crimes.”

“What crimes?”

“I falsified earnings reports to keep Whitmore Industries alive.”

“At whose instruction?”

“Daniel’s.”

“You still did it.”

“Yes.”

Peter did not ask for forgiveness.

That made his confession more believable.

He handed Nora a folder containing internal financial records.

Whitmore Industries was nearly insolvent.

Daniel had diverted foundation money to cover company losses.

The missing four hundred thousand dollars was only the most recent transfer.

Over seven years, more than twelve million had disappeared.

Nora turned to Peter.

“Why are you helping now?”

“Because Evelyn told Daniel to make me the fall guy.”

“And because I heard what they planned for Claire.”

“What exactly did they plan?”

Peter looked at me.

“After the board dinner, Daniel intended to keep you in the wine cellar until you signed away the trust.”

May you like

“And if I refused?”

Peter’s silence answered me.
