Chapter 11 - The Email Ethan Could Not Deny

Ethan read the email again.
Mara watched his face change from confusion to dread.
Helen stood at the end of the table, gripping the back of a chair.
"You remember it," Mara said.
Ethan did not answer.
"I can see it."
He closed his eyes.
"I remember writing to Martin."
The room went silent.
Mara felt something inside her turn cold.
"So you lied."
"I didn't remember that sentence until I saw it."
"That's still not an answer."
Ethan placed both hands flat on the table.
"I got a message from you on May 1 saying you had spoken to a divorce attorney."
Mara stared at him.
"I never spoke to a divorce attorney."
"I know that now."
"What did the message say?"
Ethan looked ashamed.
"It said you had learned the house might be worth more than I told you."
Mara almost laughed.
"You never told me what the house was worth because I never asked."
"I panicked."
"So you called Martin."
"Yes."
Helen's eyes narrowed.
"You told me you hadn't spoken to him in years."
Ethan looked at her.
"I didn't tell you anything about Martin."
"When you left, you said you were handling the property paperwork yourself."
Mara raised her voice.
"Stop talking around me."
Both went quiet.
She looked at Ethan.
"What did you ask Martin to do?"
Ethan swallowed.
"I asked whether the house could be moved into a trust before a divorce filing."
Mara stared at him.
The sentence hurt more than the forged messages.
"Before you called me?"
"Yes."
"Before you came home?"
"Yes."
"Before you checked whether your wife, who was in cancer treatment, had actually decided to leave you?"
Ethan's eyes filled with shame.
"Yes."
Mara pushed away from the table.
She had no dramatic speech ready.
The pain was too old and too tired for drama.
"You protected the house before you protected me."
Ethan stood.
"I was scared."
Mara laughed bitterly.
"Everyone in this house keeps using fear as a permission slip."
He looked down.
Helen sat quietly.
For once, she did not defend him.
Mara pointed at the email.
"Did you write that sentence?"
Ethan nodded.
"Yes."
"Who is 'she'?"
"I meant you."
The honesty hit like a slap.
Mara turned away.
"I thought the message was real."
"You thought I was secretly trying to take something from you."
"Yes."
"And you believed that more easily than you believed I loved you."
Ethan had no answer.
Mara walked to the back door.
He did not follow.
She stepped onto the patio and stood beside the white dish tub.
The water had stopped hours ago, but the plates still sat in cloudy water.
She looked at them and suddenly hated the sight.
She tipped the tub over.
Water rushed across the concrete.
A ceramic plate slid out and shattered.
Mara stared at the pieces.
Ethan appeared in the doorway.
"Are you okay?"
She almost laughed.
"No."
He stepped outside but kept his distance.
"I canceled it the next morning."
Mara looked at him.
"Canceled what?"
"I told Martin I didn't want to move the house."
"Why?"
"Because I realized I was becoming my father."
Mara said nothing.
"I called you six times that day."
"I never got the calls."
"I know."
"And after six calls, you gave up?"
Ethan's face tightened.
"The next message from your number said that if I came home, you'd have security remove me."
Mara looked toward Helen through the kitchen window.
"And you believed it."
"I believed you were angry."
"I was dying of loneliness."
The sentence came out quietly.
Ethan looked as though his breath had been taken away.
Mara turned back toward the yard.
"I used to sleep with my phone on my chest because I thought I might miss your call."
"Mara."
"Don't."
She wiped her eyes.
"You don't get to fix five months with one afternoon."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"I'm starting to."
Mara looked at him.
His answer did not make her forgive him.
It was simply the first thing he had said that did not sound like a defense.
Behind them, Helen's phone rang.
She answered in the kitchen.
Her voice was low, but Mara caught one sentence through the screen door.
"I told you not to contact me again."
Ethan heard it too.
They both turned.
Helen saw them watching and ended the call.
Ethan stepped inside.
"Who was that?"
"Wrong number."
Mara entered behind him.
"You said you told them not to contact you again."
Helen's face tightened.
"It was Martin."
Ethan immediately held out his hand.
"Give me the phone."
"No."
"Mom."
"He said the police came to his office."
"Good."
Helen's voice shook.
"He said if anyone tries to freeze the lien, he'll release the hospital video."
Mara felt cold.
"What hospital video?"
Helen closed her eyes.
Ethan stared at her.
"What video?"
Helen lowered herself into a chair.
"The night Mara signed the authorization forms."
Mara's heart began to race.
"You told me there was no video."
May you like
Helen looked at her.
"I lied."
