Chapter 18 - The Sale Helen Planned First

Mara returned home with the sentence repeating in her head.
Ask Helen why she scheduled your house to be sold before Martin ever filed the lien.
Ethan met her at the gate.
He did not ask whether she was okay.
He had finally learned that the question was too small.
"They got the box?"
Mara nodded.
"And Vivian."
"What did she say?"
"A lot."
Mara walked past him.
Helen sat in the kitchen with both hands wrapped around a mug she was not drinking from.
Mara placed a photocopy of the old restitution letter on the table.
Helen looked at it and began to cry.
Mara remained standing.
"You were sending Ethan's money into Weller Asset Management."
Helen nodded.
Ethan stared at his mother.
"You redirected my payroll?"
"The first three deposits."
"Why?"
Helen wiped her face.
"Because the money in that account belonged to Mara's family."
Mara felt no relief.
"You could have told me."
"I was afraid."
"I know."
Mara's voice was flat.
"You were always afraid right before you decided something for me."
Helen lowered her head.
Ethan looked at the document.
"How much was supposed to be there?"
"Almost half a million originally."
"How much is there now?"
"I don't know."
Mara sat across from her.
"Vivian said you planned to sell the house before Martin filed his lien."
Helen went completely still.
Ethan looked at her.
"Is that true?"
Helen's silence lasted too long.
Mara leaned forward.
"I am not asking twice."
Helen nodded.
"Yes."
Mara felt the answer in her chest even though she had expected it.
"Why?"
"Because I thought selling the house was the only way to pay back the restitution account before you learned what Paul had done."
Ethan stared at her.
"You were going to sell our home to repay money Dad already stole?"
"Yes."
"Without telling us?"
"Yes."
Mara's eyes narrowed.
"How were you going to sell a house you didn't own?"
Helen looked at her.
The expression was almost unbearable.
"That is why I needed your signature."
Everything became clear at once.
The separation agreement.
The relocation plan.
The pressure.
The locked bedroom.
The constant insistence that Mara was confused.
Helen had needed Mara to stop feeling like an owner before asking her to sign like one.
"You were trying to make me leave voluntarily."
Helen began to sob.
"I thought if I could sell it, put the money back, and move you somewhere safe, the whole thing would end."
Mara stared at her.
"You humiliated me for weeks because you wanted a cleaner closing."
"No."
"That is exactly what you did."
"I lost control."
"You had control."
Mara's voice rose for the first time.
"That was the problem."
Ethan stepped toward his mother.
"Did you ever intend to tell us?"
Helen looked at him.
"After the sale."
"After Mara lost the house."
"I thought the money would make it right."
Mara laughed bitterly.
"Money you weren't even planning to tell me was mine."
Helen covered her face.
Mara looked at Ethan.
"This is what protecting secrets does."
He nodded slowly.
"I know."
She looked back at Helen.
"Pack a bag."
Helen lowered her hands.
"What?"
"You cannot stay here tonight."
Ethan did not interfere.
Helen looked at him desperately.
"Ethan."
He shook his head.
"Don't ask me to override her again."
Helen's face crumpled.
Mara stood.
"You can stay at a hotel."
"I don't have much money."
"Then Ethan can pay for two nights."
Helen looked at Mara.
"And after that?"
Mara held her gaze.
"After that, you solve your own problem."
Helen went upstairs.
Ethan remained in the kitchen.
Mara sat alone at the table.
After a moment, he spoke.
"Do you want me to go too?"
Mara considered the question.
"Not tonight."
Ethan nodded.
"Okay."
"But don't mistake that for choosing you."
"I won't."
An hour later, Helen came down with a small suitcase.
She paused beside Mara.
"There is something I need to give you."
Mara did not respond.
Helen removed a folded paper from her purse.
It was a real estate listing agreement.
The property description matched the Bennett house.
The proposed asking price was $640,000.
Mara looked at the date.
April 22.
More than two weeks before the hospital video.
The seller signature line was blank.
But the buyer representative section contained a name.
Claire Vale.
Mara looked up.
"Martin's daughter was going to buy the house?"
Helen shook her head.
"Not for herself."
"For who?"
Helen's voice was barely audible.
"For Weller Asset Management."
Ethan stepped closer.
"The company in my name."
Helen nodded.
Mara felt a new kind of dread.
If the sale had gone through, the house would have appeared to move from Ethan and Mara into a company legally owned by Ethan.
On paper, it could look as though Ethan had planned everything.
Helen took a shaky breath.
"Martin wasn't only stealing the house."
May you like
She looked at her son.
"He was building a case that Ethan stole it from Mara."
