Chapter 1 - The Name Inside the Folder.

The federal agent slid the document across the empty table.
David stared down at it without touching it.
At the top, in clean black letters, was a name that should never have appeared on any corporate document.
LILY ANNE VANCE.
His face changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
I saw it.
Agent Marcus Hale saw it too.
Julianne took another step backward.
“What is that?”
David ignored her.
His eyes stayed locked on Lily’s name.
Agent Hale tapped the bottom of the page.
“Mr. Vance, do you recognize this signature?”
David’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Because the signature was his.
Seven years earlier, David had signed a Beneficial Ownership Certification establishing an offshore corporation called LV7 Holdings.
The listed owner was Lily.
At the time, Lily had been three months old.
Her Social Security number appeared beneath the company name.
Her supposed authorization appeared on a second page.
A three-month-old baby had somehow approved the movement of millions of dollars.
David finally looked at me.
“Maya, where did you get this?”
I almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because even then, surrounded by federal agents, he still assumed I had caused the problem.
“I found what you left behind.”
His expression hardened.
“You went through my private files?”
Agent Hale interrupted.
“Those files stopped being private when they became evidence of federal wire fraud, identity theft, tax evasion, and money laundering.”
Julianne whispered something under her breath.
David turned toward her.
“Don’t say anything.”
That was when the handcuffs came out.
David suddenly raised both hands.
“Wait.”
His voice cracked.
“I can explain.”
Agent Hale nodded calmly.
“You’ll have an opportunity.”
David looked around the empty mansion again.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“Where’s Lily?”
The room went silent.
For fourteen days, I had imagined this moment.
I thought I would scream.
I thought I would slap him.
I thought I would tell him every horrible detail.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.
“You really don’t know?”
David frowned.
“Maya, enough.”
His old impatience returned for half a second.
“Where is our daughter?”
I walked toward him.
I stopped close enough to smell sunscreen on his skin.
“She died eleven days ago.”
Everything inside David’s face collapsed.
He stared at me.
Then he shook his head.
“No.”
Julianne covered her mouth.
David shook his head again.
“No, she didn’t.”
“She did.”
“You’re lying.”
“I called you fifty times.”
His breathing became shallow.
“Maya.”
“She was asking for you.”
“No.”
“She asked me why her daddy wouldn’t answer.”
David stumbled backward.
One of the troopers caught his arm.
“She died at 2:17 in the morning.”
His knees nearly gave out.
“You buried her?”
“Yes.”
“Without me?”
That question finally broke something loose inside me.
I stepped closer.
“You abandoned her before I buried her.”
David stared at me in horror.
I continued.
“You demanded fourteen days without your family.”
“So I gave you exactly what you asked for.”
His face twisted.
“I didn’t know.”
Agent Hale looked at him.
Then he reached into the leather folder.
“There’s something else you should understand, Mr. Vance.”
He removed a second document.
It was a digital communication report.
David saw the date.
His entire body froze.
Agent Hale spoke quietly.
“Our investigation indicates that you may have known considerably more than you’re admitting.”
And for the first time, David stopped looking like a grieving father.
May you like
He looked like a man terrified of what we had discovered.
