Chapter 7 - The Life David Invented.

The recordings lasted six hours.

By the end, I no longer recognized the man I had married.

Perhaps I never had.

David discussed politicians.

Consultants.

Hospital executives.

Offshore bankers.

Fake vendors.

Shell corporations.

Bribes disguised as advisory fees.

Charity donations that returned through private companies.

Everything was calculated.

Even me.

In one recording, Thomas asked whether our marriage created financial exposure.

David laughed.

“Maya believes the family office handles everything.”

He was right.

I had trusted him.

When accountants asked for signatures, David explained the documents.

When lawyers scheduled meetings, David told me they were routine.

When I questioned large transfers, he kissed my forehead and called me his worrier.

Love had been converted into access.

Trust had been converted into camouflage.

Then Agent Hale played a recording from eight months earlier.

Thomas sat across from David inside his office.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Maya requested copies of Lily’s trust documents.”

I remembered that day.

Lily’s school had asked for updated emergency information.

I had noticed one financial account listed under her name.

I asked David about it.

He told me it was a college fund.

In the recording, David looked irritated.

“Give her the clean trust.”

“What about LV7?”

“She doesn’t know it exists.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“And if she finds it?”

David stared into the camera.

“Then I accelerate the divorce.”

My blood went cold.

Rebecca Sloan paused the video.

“What does that mean?”

Julianne slowly raised her hand.

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

She looked sick.

“David told me he was planning to leave Maya.”

I already knew about the affair.

Still, hearing the words hurt.

“When?”

“He said after the Bahamas.”

“And Lily?”

Julianne swallowed.

“He said he wanted primary custody.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He said Maya was unstable.”

My chair scraped backward.

Agent Hale immediately moved closer.

Julianne kept talking.

“He said there were doctors who could testify that Maya had anxiety problems.”

“I don’t have anxiety problems.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t know anything about me.”

Julianne started crying again.

“He told me you screamed constantly.”

“I called my husband because our child was dying.”

“I understand.”

“He created that story before the ICU.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Another recording confirmed it.

Thomas asked David about a psychiatrist named Dr. Phillip Grant.

David replied:

“He’ll document whatever we need.”

Rebecca froze the video.

Dr. Grant’s name was familiar to federal investigators.

He had provided mental-health evaluations in several high-value divorce cases.

Agent Hale made a phone call.

Within an hour, agents obtained a warrant for Grant’s office.

But the worst discovery came from David’s own voice.

In another recording, Thomas asked why David wanted custody.

David answered casually.

“Because Lily controls the paper companies.”

“If Maya gets custody and starts reviewing things, we’re exposed.”

There it was.

David had never planned to fight for Lily because he loved her.

He planned to use custody to protect the fraud.

I stood up.

“I need air.”

Agent Hale followed me into the hallway.

“Maya.”

“I’m fine.”

“You don’t have to keep watching.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

I looked back through the glass at the frozen image of my husband.

“Because he spent years telling me I was imagining things.”

“I want to know exactly how much I wasn’t imagining.”

Agent Hale said nothing.

Then his phone rang.

His expression changed as he listened.

“What happened?”

He ended the call.

“We found Thomas Mercer.”

“Where?”

“At O’Hare.”

“Trying to leave?”

Agent Hale shook his head.

“Trying to meet someone.”

“Who?”

He looked through the glass at Julianne.

“David’s criminal defense attorney.”
