Chapter 1: The Gates Closed at 11:47 PM
Adrian laughed as Claire lowered her phone.
"Your father?" he mocked. "The man you haven't spoken to in years? Do you expect him to rescue you?"
Claire said nothing.
She simply slipped the soaked phone back into her purse and walked away from the mansion without looking back.
That silence unsettled Adrian more than any threat could have.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"She's bluffing."
"Of course she is," Adrian replied, though his voice carried less confidence than before.
Inside the mansion, the servants exchanged uneasy glances.

Most of them had worked there long before Adrian married Claire.
Some remembered luxury cars arriving every Christmas—not from Adrian's company, but from an old family corporation whose name was never mentioned aloud.
Some remembered Claire quietly paying for employees' children's surgeries.
Some remembered a silver-haired gentleman who visited only once every year. Whenever he arrived, even the property managers treated him with extraordinary respect.
No one had ever asked why.
At exactly 10:15 p.m., every television inside the mansion interrupted its programming.
Breaking News.
"Blackstone International Holdings has announced the immediate removal of Adrian Hawthorne as acting Chief Executive Officer."
Adrian stared.
"What?"
His phone exploded with notifications.
Emergency Board Meeting.
Trading Suspended.
All executive authority revoked.
He called his assistant.
No answer.
He called the legal department.
Disconnected.
Then another email appeared.
Property ownership review completed.
His smile disappeared.
"What is this?"
Vanessa frowned.
"What happened?"
Before Adrian could answer, headlights flooded the front entrance.
Seven black vehicles rolled through the gates.
Not police.
Not reporters.
Corporate security.
Men in dark suits stepped out, followed by an elderly gentleman carrying a leather portfolio.
He stopped before Adrian.
"Mr. Hawthorne?"
"Yes?"
The lawyer handed him several documents.
"Effective immediately, all properties held under Hawthorne Development were acquired tonight by Blackstone Legacy Trust."
Adrian laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
"It was always possible."
The lawyer adjusted his glasses.
"The trust was the original owner."
Adrian blinked.
"What trust?"
"The trust established twenty-eight years ago by Mr. William Ashford."
Claire's father.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Adrian's arm.
"...Who's William Ashford?"
The lawyer looked genuinely surprised.
"You married his daughter without knowing?"
Silence.
The servants lowered their heads.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The mansion.
The investments.
The impossible business opportunities Adrian had always taken credit for.
None of them had come from him.
He had simply married into them.
At 11:47 p.m., the electronic gates slowly closed.
The security system reset.
Access denied.
Adrian reached for the keypad.
ERROR.
His fingerprint no longer worked.
May you like
Neither did his security code.
The home no longer recognized him.
