Chapter 1 – Five Minutes Later

Chapter 1 – Five Minutes Later

The sound of sirens echoed through the streets long before anyone reached Apartment 42B.

Clare barely remained conscious.

Her father's voice stayed on the phone the entire time.

"I'm still here."

Those three words became the only thing keeping her awake.

Seven minutes later, the penthouse door burst open.

Not Matthew.

Three men in dark suits entered first, sweeping every room with practiced precision before lowering their weapons.

"Henderson, clear."

The oldest among them hurried toward Clare.

His gray hair had become thinner over the years, but she recognized him immediately.

"Henderson..."

His eyes filled with sorrow.

"I should never have let you disappear, Miss Clare."

He carefully wrapped a blanket around her shoulders just as paramedics rushed inside.

One medic gasped.

"My God..."

Bruises already covered nearly every visible inch of her body.

Fresh welts crossed her back.

Her left wrist appeared fractured.

As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Henderson quietly photographed every injury.

Every bruise.

Every cut.

Every broken piece of furniture.

The shattered cane.

Nothing would disappear before sunrise.

Three hundred miles away in Boston...

Richard Sterling stood inside the executive boardroom of Sterling Global Holdings.

He had not slept.

Twenty-seven executives watched in complete silence.

Richard placed a leather folder onto the conference table.

Inside were documents few people even knew existed.

"NexusCore."

Every executive looked up.

"I financed its first eighteen months."

Several exchanged surprised glances.

"They never knew."

Richard nodded.

"My daughter insisted they never should."

He opened another file.

Convertible loan agreements.

Silent investment contracts.

Personal guarantees.

Control clauses.

One signature activated them all.

Richard calmly picked up his phone.

"Execute Phase One."

Within seconds...

Banks froze NexusCore's primary credit facilities.

Three venture partners suspended pending investments.

Two suppliers demanded immediate payment.

The company's emergency operating line disappeared.

Matthew Hayes had built his empire believing it belonged entirely to him.

He never realized its foundation rested on promises Richard Sterling had quietly made years earlier to protect his daughter.

Five minutes after Clare's phone call...

Matthew's empire began collapsing.

He simply hadn't noticed yet.

At 6:42 a.m., Matthew walked into NexusCore headquarters wearing his usual confident smile.

His assistant looked pale.

"Sir..."

"What now?"

"The banks are on line one."

"Tell them I'll call later."

"They said... there may not be a later."

May you like

His smile faded.

That was only the first phone call.
