Chapter 3 – The Boardroom Reckoning

Chapter 3 – The Boardroom Reckoning
Three days later...
Matthew entered the emergency board meeting expecting support.
Instead...
Every director avoided eye contact.
The chairman slid a tablet across the table.
It displayed hospital photographs.
Bruises.
Medical reports.
Security footage.
Matthew's face turned white.
"Where did you get these?"
The conference room doors opened.
Richard Sterling walked inside.
Beside him...
Clare.
She moved slowly with the aid of a cane.
Not because she was weak.
Because she refused to hide.
Every director immediately stood.
Matthew blinked.
"You... know Richard Sterling?"
Richard answered calmly.
"I raised his wife."
Silence swallowed the room.
Matthew looked at Clare.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
She met his eyes without fear.
"You only asked what I could do for you."
Richard addressed the board.
"My daughter designed your first investor presentation."
"She negotiated your earliest partnerships."
"Half the clients sitting in your database answered her phone calls."
He paused.
"You erased her name."
"You won't erase the truth."
The chairman quietly announced the decision.
"Matthew Hayes..."
"The Board votes unanimously to remove you as CEO."
He stared in disbelief.
"You can't!"
Richard slid one final document across the table.
"I already own forty-eight percent."
"The remaining directors own enough to finish the vote."
The decision passed instantly.
