Chapter 1: The Woman Who Refused to Freeze

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Refused to Freeze
The temperature kept falling.
Minus four.
Minus five.
The cold bit through Evelyn's gloves, crept beneath her coat, and wrapped around her bones like steel chains.
She glanced at her watch.
11:52 p.m.
Exactly four minutes after Nathan had locked the freezer.
Anyone watching the security cameras would expect panic.
Instead...
She counted.
One hundred twenty seconds.
One hundred eighty.
Three hundred.
Then she walked calmly toward the third shelf of frozen seafood.
Behind stacks of sealed lobster crates sat an ordinary-looking metal rack.
She removed three boxes.
Pressed her hand beneath the lowest support beam.
Click.
A hidden maintenance panel swung open.
Donovan's engineering team had worked quickly.
The emergency passage was barely wide enough for one person, leading into a narrow insulated service tunnel built decades earlier during HarborLock's original construction.
Nathan had never known it existed.
Few people did.
Evelyn slipped inside and quietly closed the panel behind her.
She wasn't escaping.
Not yet.
She wanted Nathan to believe she was still trapped.
At 12:18 a.m., Nathan returned.
He stood outside Unit Seven holding two cups of coffee.
Lila stood beside him, one hand resting dramatically on her stomach.
"You think she's gone already?" she whispered.
Nathan smiled.
"By morning, hypothermia."
"No bruises."
"No questions."
Lila kissed him.
"When this is over..."
"We'll finally be rich."
Nathan laughed.
"We already are."
Hidden inside the ventilation shaft above them...
A tiny recorder captured every word.
Across town, Donovan watched the live feed on six computer monitors.
Every confession automatically uploaded to three encrypted servers.
There would be no deleting this.
No disappearing evidence.
Nathan had just confessed to murder before the body even existed.
At 2:07 a.m., another visitor arrived.
Paige.
She stepped into the loading dock carrying a bottle of champagne.
"I brought something for tomorrow."
Nathan raised an eyebrow.
"Tomorrow?"
"Our freedom party."
She giggled.
"I always hated her."
"She made me get a job."
"Can you imagine?"
Lila laughed.
Nathan uncorked the champagne.
Three crystal glasses clinked together.
"To Evelyn," Lila toasted.
"May she never leave Unit Seven."
Above them...
Another camera quietly recorded every smile.
Every laugh.
Every toast to murder.
Inside the hidden tunnel...
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she finally understood something.
None of them had ever loved her.
They had only loved what belonged to her.
May you like
By dawn...
They would lose all of it.
