Chapter 3: The Man Who Locked Himself Away

Chapter 3: The Man Who Locked Himself Away
Nathan refused to speak without a lawyer.
Miriam arrived thirty minutes later, dressed in black as though already attending Evelyn's funeral.
She stopped the moment she saw Evelyn alive.
Impossible.
That single word escaped her lips.
Donovan smiled.
"Not impossible."
"Documented."
He pressed a remote.
A giant warehouse monitor flickered to life.
The first recording played.
Nathan.
Lila.
Paige.
Laughing.
Toasting Evelyn's death.
Then another.
Miriam calmly explaining how freezing someone would leave almost no evidence.
Then another.
Nathan admitting he would inherit everything after Evelyn died.
Workers stared in horror.
Paige burst into tears.
"I didn't think he'd actually do it!"
Nathan shouted,
"Stop talking!"
Too late.
Every confession had already been copied to police servers.
Then Donovan delivered the final blow.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
"Yesterday afternoon, while you believed your wife was preparing for another business trip..."
"Evelyn legally transferred every company share into an irrevocable charitable foundation."
Nathan's knees weakened.
"The warehouses..."
"The fleet..."
"The accounts..."
"The mansion..."
"You owned none of them."
"You never did."
Everything he had tried to steal...
Had disappeared before he locked the freezer door.
Police officers stepped forward.
Nathan tried to run.
He reached the warehouse exit.
A security officer slammed the emergency lockdown button.
Every steel door automatically sealed shut.
The warehouse became one enormous locked chamber.
Nathan pounded against the exit.
"Open it!"
"LET ME OUT!"
Evelyn slowly walked toward him.
The irony settled over everyone present.
She stopped only a few feet away.
"Do you remember what you told me?"
Nathan couldn't answer.
She repeated his own words.
"You should've learned to trust your husband."
She shook her head.
"I trusted evidence instead."
The officers placed Nathan in handcuffs as the massive steel doors finally reopened.
Morning sunlight poured into the warehouse.
Nathan was led away in chains.
Miriam, Lila, and Paige followed under arrest.
Evelyn stood silently as the police convoy disappeared beyond the harbor.
For the first time in years...
The cold no longer belonged to her.
It belonged to the people who had tried to bury her in it.
And as the sun rose over the Atlantic, Evelyn realized that revenge had never been her greatest victory.
Justice was.
Because in the end, the freezer had not become her tomb.
May you like
It had become the place where every lie froze solid...
Until the truth shattered it forever.
