Chapter 1: The Trap They Never Saw Coming

Chapter 1: The Trap They Never Saw Coming

Donovan Pierce did exactly what I expected.

He believed me.

Within an hour, I was sitting inside a private conference room at his law firm while two homicide detectives from the county sheriff's office listened to every word I had heard outside Nathan's study.

Neither of them interrupted.

Neither of them dismissed me as a paranoid wife caught in a bad marriage.

When I finished, Detective Sarah Collins folded her hands.

"If they're really planning a staged accident," she said, "they'll need you alive long enough to walk into it."

Donovan looked at me.

"Are you willing to let them try?"

I stared through the window into the rainy night.

Nathan thought I was still in Chicago.

He believed I knew nothing.

For the first time since overhearing the conversation...

That ignorance became our greatest weapon.

"I'll do it."

Three days later I returned home exactly as planned.

Nathan greeted me with flowers.

He kissed my forehead.

Asked about my trip.

Even apologized for missing my calls because he'd "been working late."

Every smile felt rehearsed.

Every touch made my skin crawl.

The hardest part wasn't pretending.

It was sitting across the dinner table from the man who had already decided how I would die.

The detectives installed tiny recording devices inside my purse, my coat, even the buttons on my jacket.

Every conversation was documented.

Every lie Nathan told became evidence.

Then came Friday.

Nathan suggested we inspect one of our seafood warehouses before renewing the insurance policy.

"I just want you to look over the numbers," he said warmly.

"It'll only take an hour."

Exactly as planned.

I smiled.

"Of course."

When we arrived at HarborLock Cold Storage, Unit 7, the warehouse manager conveniently announced he had been called away.

Only Nathan and I remained.

The building felt abandoned.

The massive refrigeration units hummed like distant engines.

Nathan opened the freezer door.

"Some inventory was misplaced," he said.

"Would you mind checking the back shelves?"

I stepped inside.

The steel door closed behind me.

11:48 p.m.

Exactly the time Detective Collins had predicted.

The deadbolt clicked.

Then came Nathan's laughter.

"Goodbye, Evelyn."

"You should've trusted your husband."

He walked away without looking back.

But what Nathan didn't know...

Was that every single word had just been transmitted live.

May you like

Outside the warehouse...

Detectives were already moving.
