Chapter 3: Justice Is Colder Than Revenge

Chapter 3: Justice Is Colder Than Revenge

The trial lasted six weeks.

The recordings from HarborLock Cold Storage echoed through the courtroom.

Nathan's farewell.

His phone calls.

Miriam's instructions.

Lila's messages discussing the inheritance before my body had supposedly even been discovered.

Their own voices destroyed every defense their attorneys attempted.

The jury needed less than three hours.

Guilty.

On every count.

Attempted murder.

Conspiracy to commit murder.

Insurance fraud.

Evidence tampering.

Nathan looked at me one final time before deputies led him away.

"I loved you once."

I answered quietly.

"No."

"You loved what belonged to me."

Miriam never spoke again.

She walked into prison with the same elegance she had carried through every charity gala.

Only this time...

No one applauded.

Months later I stood on the balcony of the beach house Nathan had once dreamed of stealing.

The ocean stretched endlessly before me.

Donovan handed me the final court documents.

"It's over."

I smiled as I signed the last page.

Not because I had won.

Because I had survived.

Some people believe justice arrives with anger.

They're wrong.

Sometimes justice arrives wearing a detective's badge.

Sometimes it walks out of a freezer everyone believed would become a grave.

And sometimes...

The greatest revenge is simply opening the door yourself, stepping back into the light, and watching the people who buried you realize they failed.

I lost a husband.

But I kept my life.

My company.

My future.

May you like

And unlike the fortune Nathan tried to steal...

Those were things he would never touch again.
