Chapter 5 - The House Behind the Gates

Charlotte followed Maya's advice and did not go to Halston Ridge.

She wanted to.

Every part of her wanted to drive there, walk through the iron gates, and demand to know what her money had built.

Instead, she took Emma home, changed the condo access code, and installed a temporary door camera before sunset.

Then she sat at her kitchen counter with a cup of coffee she forgot to drink.

Emma colored at the other end of the counter.

"Mom?"

"Yeah?"

"Are we poor now?"

Charlotte looked up so fast that Emma flinched.

She softened her face.

"No. Why would you think that?"

Emma shrugged.

"Dad said you were going to mess everything up if you stopped paying."

Charlotte put her coffee down.

"When did he say that?"

"Last weekend."

"To you?"

"He was talking to Grandma."

Emma colored inside the outline of a sun.

"They thought I was watching TV."

Charlotte sat beside her.

"What else did you hear?"

Emma frowned in concentration.

"Grandma said you had to keep paying until the papers were done."

"What papers?"

"I don't know."

"Anything else?"

Emma shook her head.

Then stopped.

"Dad said something about the Ridge house being finished before court."

Charlotte's pulse jumped.

"He said before court?"

Emma nodded.

"I think so."

Charlotte did not ask more.

She did not want Emma becoming a witness inside her own childhood.

That evening, Aaron called.

"I found the contractor connected to the blocked eighteen-thousand-four-hundred-dollar payment."

Charlotte moved onto the balcony so Emma could not hear.

"Who is it?"

"Westbridge Renovations."

"Can we call them?"

"I already asked Maya. She said we can make a neutral inquiry as the account owner whose payment authorization was used."

Charlotte exhaled.

"Do it."

Aaron called on speaker.

A project manager named Nicole answered.

Aaron identified himself as Charlotte's financial representative and asked about a payment request submitted in Charlotte's name.

Nicole became cautious.

"I'll need the project number."

Aaron provided it from the bank alert.

Keys clicked on the other end.

Then Nicole said, "Yes. I see it."

Charlotte leaned closer to the phone.

Aaron asked, "What property is this associated with?"

"1418 Halston Ridge."

"And who is the client of record?"

"One moment."

Silence.

"The client is listed as Charlotte Hale."

Charlotte's hand flattened against the balcony railing.

Aaron looked at her.

"Ms. Hale is here with me. She did not hire your company."

Nicole's voice changed immediately.

"I'm sorry?"

"She did not authorize work at that property."

"I need to involve our legal department."

Maya, who had joined the call, spoke for the first time.

"Before you do, please preserve all contracts, emails, identification records, payment instructions, and signatures related to that project."

Nicole agreed.

Then Charlotte asked the question she had been holding back.

"What kind of renovation is it?"

Nicole hesitated.

"I probably shouldn't discuss details until legal reviews the file."

Maya said, "You may answer only if your policies allow it."

Another pause.

"It's a full interior renovation. Kitchen, primary suite, two bathrooms, flooring, custom cabinetry, and a converted office."

Charlotte stared into the darkening sky.

"How much is the full contract?"

Nicole hesitated again.

"One hundred eighty-six thousand dollars."

Charlotte almost lost her grip on the phone.

"And how much has already been paid?"

"According to our system, one hundred forty-two thousand."

Aaron's eyebrows rose.

"From what account?"

"Multiple payments."

"In whose name?"

Nicole went silent.

When she spoke again, her voice was much quieter.

"Charlotte Hale."

Maya ended the call after confirming preservation of the records.

Charlotte remained on the balcony.

"So they used my name to hire a contractor for a house owned by his mother's company."

Aaron nodded slowly on the video call.

"That's what it looks like."

"And they've already paid one hundred forty-two thousand dollars."

"Yes."

Charlotte laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"For a house I've never entered."

Maya's expression remained serious.

"This is getting bigger."

"I noticed."

"Do not contact David tonight."

Charlotte looked through the glass door at Emma.

Her daughter was now building a tower from colored pencils.

"I don't want to talk to him."

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

Charlotte almost ignored it.

Then she read the first line.

Before ending the call, Nicole from Westbridge added one detail.

The project had been unusually urgent from the beginning.

David repeatedly moved deadlines forward, sometimes paying rush fees to keep subcontractors working weekends.

He told the project team that a family transition depended on the house being completed on schedule.

Nicole had assumed that meant a move.

Charlotte knew now that it meant something else.

The renovation was attached to a deadline she had never been told about.

A house she had never entered was racing toward completion using her identity, her money, and a schedule controlled by people who treated her ignorance as part of the project plan.

MRS. HALE, I WORKED ON THE HALSTON RIDGE PROJECT.

A second message arrived.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT THEY PUT IN THE BASEMENT.
