Chapter 7 - The Story David Told Everyone

By Friday afternoon, David had already begun telling his version.

Charlotte knew because three people called her within two hours.

The first was David's aunt.

"I don't want to get involved."

Charlotte nearly smiled.

People who said that always called specifically to get involved.

"Then don't."

"I just think cutting off household money in the middle of a separation is harsh."

Charlotte looked at the fraud report on her desk.

"Did David tell you about the accounts opened in my name?"

Silence.

"What accounts?"

"Exactly."

Charlotte ended the call.

The second caller was Brent.

He skipped the politeness.

"You're blowing up the whole family over a misunderstanding."

"A two-hundred-forty-seven-thousand-dollar misunderstanding?"

Brent went quiet.

Charlotte continued.

"Or the one-hundred-forty-two-thousand dollars spent renovating your mother's property in my name?"

"You don't understand the structure."

"Then explain it."

"David handled the finances."

"That's not an explanation."

"You benefited from family assets too."

Charlotte's voice sharpened.

"Name one."

Brent did not.

Instead he said, "You think you're better than us because your company took off."

There it was.

The old accusation.

Success had somehow become evidence of disloyalty.

Charlotte ended that call too.

The third call came from the mother of one of Emma's classmates.

That one disturbed her.

"Charlotte, I wasn't sure whether to say anything."

"Say it."

"David posted something in the parents' group before deleting it."

Charlotte sat straighter.

"About what?"

"He said there was a temporary family emergency and asked people not to lend you money because you had frozen essential accounts."

Charlotte stared at the wall.

"He told school parents not to lend me money?"

"It was up maybe six minutes."

"Do you have a screenshot?"

"Yes."

"Please send it to me."

The screenshot arrived immediately.

David's message was carefully written.

It did not accuse Charlotte of a crime.

It did something more strategic.

It made her sound unstable.

He wrote that Charlotte was experiencing "financial stress," that she had unexpectedly interrupted household payments, and that he hoped friends would respect the family's privacy while he protected Emma from the disruption.

Charlotte read the last line three times.

While he protected Emma.

Emma, who had been eating noodles alone while his family ate crab.

Maya added the screenshot to the evidence file.

"Don't respond publicly."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

"But I want him to stop using Emma as a shield."

"Then we address it through counsel."

David's attorney sent a letter that evening.

It demanded restoration of the shared card by 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

The letter claimed David required the account for groceries, utilities, and child-related expenses.

Maya replied with a simple request.

Please provide an itemized accounting of the charges made during the previous sixty days.

No answer came.

At 9:02 Saturday morning, David texted Charlotte from a new number.

I'M COMING FOR EMMA AT TEN AS SCHEDULED.

Charlotte forwarded the message to Maya.

The parenting schedule did allow the visit.

Maya advised Charlotte not to interfere unless there was a genuine safety issue.

"But keep everything calm and documented."

At 9:58, David pulled into the condo parking garage.

Charlotte watched through the camera app.

He was alone.

That relieved her slightly.

Emma stood by the door with her backpack.

"Do I have to go?"

Charlotte looked at her.

"You get time with your dad."

Emma stared at the floor.

"What if he asks what I told you?"

Charlotte's chest tightened.

She knelt.

"You don't have to discuss grown-up money problems with anyone."

"Can I say I don't remember?"

"You can say you don't want to talk about it."

The buzzer sounded.

David waited outside the condo door.

Charlotte opened it but did not invite him in.

He looked tired.

Not remorseful.

Tired.

"You changed the code."

"Yes."

"That's unnecessary."

"It's necessary to me."

David glanced at Emma.

His expression softened instantly.

"Hey, Em. Ready?"

Emma nodded.

David reached for her backpack.

She held onto it.

He looked at Charlotte again.

"Can we talk privately?"

"No."

His jaw tightened.

"Charlotte."

"Anything about money goes through Maya. Anything about Emma can be written down."

"You're turning this into a war."

Charlotte kept her voice low.

"I froze a card. You created companies in my name."

David's face changed.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Charlotte saw it.

He knew exactly what she meant.

Then he recovered.

"You signed those documents."

Charlotte felt a chill.

"Which documents?"

David stared at her.

He had answered too quickly.

Charlotte had not named a document.

She had only said companies.

David looked away.

"Come on, Emma."

Emma stepped into the hall.

Charlotte kissed the top of her head.

"Call me anytime."

David walked toward the elevator.

Then he turned back.

"You should really ask your lawyer what happens when one spouse deliberately destroys a family business."

Charlotte stared at him.

"What family business?"

The elevator doors opened.

David smiled without warmth.

"The one you own."

The doors closed.

Charlotte immediately called Aaron.

"I need you to find every debt tied to Hale Family Holdings."

Aaron was quiet for a moment.

"I already started."

"And?"

"Charlotte, there is one loan."

After David left with Emma, Charlotte stood in the hallway long after the elevator closed.

She resisted the urge to call Emma immediately.

Maya had warned her not to turn routine parenting time into an interrogation.

So Charlotte waited.

She wrote down exactly what David had said about the company and the documents.

Then she wrote down what he had not said.

He had not asked which companies she found.

He had not sounded surprised that companies existed.

He had jumped directly to a defense.

That difference mattered.

By the time Charlotte finished the note, fear had changed into something colder and more useful.

A list of questions.

Her stomach dropped.

May you like

"How much?"

"Nine hundred thousand dollars."
