Chapter 3 - THIRTY-EIGHT PERCENT

Lucas stared at Willow as if her face had transformed.
âYou own thirty-eight percent?â
âI didnât know.â
Richard laughed suddenly.
It sounded forced.
âThis changes nothing.â
Eleanor Shaw looked at him.
âIt changes a great deal.â
Richard turned.
âThe Sterlings still control the remaining shares.â
âNot exactly.â
Eleanor opened another folder.
The Donovan trust did not merely hold thirty-eight percent of common voting stock.
It held founder-class shares.
Those shares carried enhanced voting rights during what the agreement called a Founder Default Event.
Lucas looked irritated.
âWhat does that mean?â
Martin Keene answered.
âFraud.â
âFelony misconduct.â
âMisappropriation of corporate assets.â
âOr deliberate harm against a direct Donovan beneficiary committed by a Sterling executive.â
The silence that followed was extraordinary.
Every eye moved toward Willowâs cheek.
Lucas finally understood.
âYou cannot be serious.â
Michael looked at him.
âSix hundred witnesses.â
Lucas stepped backward.
Richard moved quickly.
âA marital disagreement does not activate a corporate covenant.â
Eleanorâs voice remained professional.
âThat determination belongs to independent counsel.â
âWhich has already been contacted.â
Richard turned toward Michael.
âYou planned this.â
Michaelâs face hardened.
âI spent thirty-one years trying to make sure this never happened.â
âYou came after my daughter tonight.â
Richardâs nostrils flared.
âYour daughter married into my family willingly.â
Michael pointed toward Willow.
âAnd your son hit her willingly.â
Lucas moved closer to Willow.
âWe need to talk.â
âNo.â
âWillow.â
âI said no.â
The word seemed to shock him more than anything else.
For five years, Lucas had been trained to expect eventual surrender.
Willow had mistaken surrender for compromise.
Not anymore.
Martinâs phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
Then he looked at Richard.
âThe board has requested an emergency session at nine tomorrow morning.â
Richardâs jaw tightened.
âCancel it.â
âI cannot.â
âIâm chairman.â
Martin swallowed.
âNot during a Founder Default review.â
Richard turned to Michael.
âThis company employs twelve thousand people.â
âYou want to destroy all of them because your daughter got slapped?â
Michael stepped forward.
âNo.â
âI want to find out what you have been doing with a company my father helped build.â
Richardâs face changed again.
That fear returned.
Deeper now.
Willow saw it.
And Michael saw that she saw it.
On the elevator down, Willow finally asked him.
âWhat else is there?â
Michael waited until the doors closed.
Then he looked at Helena, who had followed Willow without hesitation.
âThereâs something Richard has spent thirty years making sure nobody opens.â
âWhat?â
Michael answered.
âThe founder ledger.â
Willow frowned.
Michaelâs voice lowered.
May you like
âAnd if Iâm right about whatâs inside it, Lucas slapping you tonight is going to be the smallest scandal the Sterling family has by morning.â
